Pre-Windows 8 PC Sales Worse than Expected

That the PC market is in decline is no secret. But separate reports released this week by Gartner, IDC, and IHS iSuppli assert that the downward trend is even more pronounced than originally anticipated. IHS iSuppli said 2012 will be the industry's first year-over-year drop in units shipped since the dot-com bust took its toll 11 years ago. The contraction was caused by a variety of factors, ranging from the growing popularity of smartphones and tablets to economic concerns to the fact that many enterprises are midway through refresh cycles.

I like the Windows 8 OS, it is neat, simple, and elegant, and I'd appreciate if you add me to the fanboy list. :)

They are looking at the number of units that the vendors have shipped to the re-sellers. There is a small downturn because of the economy but also retailers were downsizing their inventory to wait on Windows 8 units to ship. We won't know until later this year where this is going.

I'm surprised the percentages have dropped so little. I'm also surprised these analysts never mentioned that given the power of PCs over the past few years they don't need to be replaced for the next faster thing. I believe that is the bigger issue along with the move to tablets for daily content consumption, it's a lot more efficient to have instant on tablet to get your daily socialization in through out the day then to boot up a pc. Windows 8 won't change anything, the OS brings new life to older hardware and it's also going to push more tablet and hybrid sales. Rather than looking ONLY at the PC as dropping in sales they should put PCs, Tablets and hybrids together into the same group and look at it as computing devices.

As for the enterprise it has little to do with Windows 8 also, enterprises don't jump on the next OS right away. Also again there is no need to replace hardware that has more performance than required even today on hardware that is a couple of years old. Add to that the move to VDI as well which also takes a chunk out of PC sales at the enterprise. Whatever OEMs will lose in PC sales they will make up in tablets or hybrids while still attracting those that NEED power house PCs like gamers etc.

Couldn't agree with you more. My three year old HP which I just upgraded to a AMD Athlon II X6 (love the speed) should last at least another two years.

Also with the price drop of SSDs the need to upgrade to an new PC has become another reason not to upgrade. Also, with ram being inexpensive is just another reason.

Well to be fair most people do not upgrade or buy new PC's until they can read reviews on it!

Hi there
if Gartner's say something usually the OPPOSITE is usually true --that "consultancy" has about as much use as a Solar Powered can opener at the bottom of a deep goldmine.

If Gartner's are saying W8 sales aren't as expected just wait a couple of months and their estimate will be totally be shown to be nothing more than a "Guestimate".

Since W8 has only been officially released for less than a WEEK I doubt whether even MS themselves have got the sales returns in -- most retail outlets won't even SUBMIT their results for at least a month so where on earth do Gartner's get their stats from --presumable as always from "thin air".

Remember we've got W8 for tablets and Phones to come as well.

Cheers
