If These 5 People Who Tried Windows 8 Are Normal, Microsoft Has A Big Problem On Its Hands

Microsoft is launching its new operating system, Windows 8, this week.

Windows 8 is a radical departure for anyone who has used Windows in the past two decades. The new interface is designed primarily for touch-screens. And based on some anecdotal responses from those who have tried it--professional reviewers and normal people alike--it's not exactly love at first sight.

SAI's Matt Rosoff reviewed a preview version of Windows 8 a couple of months ago. He found it "needlessly confusing and hard to use."

The AP said the new OS interface "baffles" consumers.

The New York Times's David Gallagher invited 5 people to try Windows 8 and filmed them while they did so. One of the five people seemed to like the look of the design ("Awesome," "This is so cool,"). But figuring out how to actually go about doing things seemed to confuse the hell out of everyone--including the person who liked the design.

I find myself explaining things to the 10 year olds when I fix peoples TV's. If the parent objects, I explain that they are there at least another 8 years, and they may as well take advantage ;)

It definitely says something when a three year old kid can use Windows 8 without much issue, but an old timer Windows user will have difficulty with it....

It says that kids are used to simple devices, and have experiences with phones and tablets. Just because a child could use Windows 8 doesn't mean that functionally speaking it's great for all purposes, people and tasks. My kids needs of a computer are not very advanced at all, and for them, the full screen metro apps suit those needs well.

With this said, my 5 year old can logon to Windows (vista or 7), can access YouTube and Angry birds through the browser bookmark bar. He has no issues recording a video on my Android tablet or phone, or my wife's previous iPhone and actually upload it to YouTube. He has played and beaten Mario Galaxy, Mario Galaxy 2, and Super Mario Bros Wii on the Wii, as well as Super Mario Bros on the Nintendo DS. He has absolutely no problems using a touchscreen device, a trackpad, a standard mouse or a trackball. Kids are really advanced these days versus when I was a kid.

That has nothing to do with it, I doubt that this 3 yr old just started using Windows 8 and figured it out on his own. However, he was shown how to use it and he can. The article above is the usual BS drop a Windows 8 computer in front of someone and say "USE IT". As I said for that other kid who did the same on the streets with his laptop, take 5 mins to show the basics of Windows 8 functionality and no user would struggle with it.

Are you kidding me? - yeah, after his dad showed him what to do, which we didn't see? This kid has already had a run-through because halfway through the video he asked about playing the music game. Someone who has never seen Windows 8 doesn't know about the music game.
I love how that's being disputed, that somehow the dad already showed his kid how to use it...

Some people...

Coke use common sense. The dad says at one point - How do we find the pinball game that's already running? Either the kid has ESP or has been shown there's a pinball game already running. When the kid goes looking for the game, he brings up the clock. Then the dad corrects him and says - go up to that corner again and show us. Then the kid goes to another corner and it's wrong and the dad says - no, no, you want to go to the programs that are already open.

At the begining, the dad asks the kid to find the Start Menu. And the kid corrects him - that's the Start Screen. ESP or prior use? You be the judge.

The kid is being told what to do in almost everything the dad says - no, slide it, no go to that corner, no click on that spot, etc. Remember the old dad video from months back? The son didn't coach him - just sat him there and let him figure it out, which the dad could not do. Have you been around three-year-olds? They can't keep crayons inside the lines in a coloring book, and here you are trying to tell me that this kid knows instinctively what no adult could know - like closing a program in 8 by dragging it down, or getting back to the start menu which by going to the corner. Even you and others have said that it's confusing at first but that once you teach someone it's easy. You're right. But this is the most un-intuitive OS MS has ever made, with hidden commands and gestures, and you are actually arguing that this kid had no clue what 8 was before the camera turned on?

I put Windows 8 in front of a newborn today, and didn't say anything and they pounded on the keys from the start screen and were actually searching for programs. It was so intuitive.

No - the fact that a kid can use 8 isn't the issue. If you're shown how to use it, it's easy to use. I don't know who would disagree with that, certainly not me. The greater point is: once I know how to use it, do I want to? Does it really help me be more productive? The answers are 100% subjective and too many Metro lovers treat them as 100% objective.

I like how it ends off saying you should download a start menu! :D

Microsoft, Intel, and many other OEMs must be feeling confident enough to think Windows 8 will work. It's a huge change, like everyone in the video pointed out, but as time and history has shown, that gets done away with. I have to wonder why he didn't have a tablet PC to let people use.

Then again, contrast this to my earlier post of a three year old kid using it fairly ok, I have think about generational traits. I feel like Windows 8 will do real well with younger people, but not so much with older people. Mostly because younger people these days seem more adaptable and more impressionable, and maybe even more curious about new things. Older people tend to rely on things that they learned back in their younger days. I think the guy's earlier video of his dad using 8 and him saying where the start menu and button is at and trying to find it in traditional places. But the three year old kid can move around the UI without too much difficulty.

Windows 8 might end up being a well researched and studied item in sociology and psychology classes...

So, it is true then, we must not show people how to use a PC, they must learn it on their own, with asking any questions. Nice.
So, the dad showed the kid how to use Win8 and that's wrong? Yes Yes I get it. Let's see him try using it for the first time.

Come on that is strawman argument.

People were deathly afraid to touch the start button for fear of breaking the OS back int he day. That is true.

I think we are not...

A.) giving people enough credit
B.) expecting they are smart enough to figure out a PDA, but too stupid to use Windows 8.

That's just, I'm sorry, but not really, narrow minded crap.

Or maybe it isn't,, maybe people are that stupid, or just that lazy, what does that really say about people then in general?

And let's take this honesty a little further,,,, How many people out there really, honestly, really need a Smart Phone?

And before anyone says it,,, I am talking strictly about intuitiveness

Tepid & Coke - with all due respect you are not comprehending the complaints. Tepid - you've been a member here longer than most anyone. You should know that almost this entire calendar year on this site, people have spelled out specifically their problems with 8 and here it is late October and it's gone over your heads. Old people hate change, people are too stupid, blah, blah, blah.

No.<-------------- see this?

How many times do anti-8 people have to say it? My guess is a minimum of 73,263,495,209,835,710,928,317 times. I say Metro doesn't suit me. You hate change. No, that's not correct. Well, not you but old people. Ah, no. Strawman about the learning curve. I mean what the hell?

If you give the average person, like in that video, a ONE minute walk through they will be flying through it in no time.
This is ridiculously rude Windows 8/MS bashing.

I gave several people a 1-2 minute walk through and they had no problems using Windows 8.

It's just like in statistics, how you ask the question or infer your opinion will skew the result.

Did you easily find the shutdown button in XP or Vista the first time you opened it?
Or pick your favorite OS, when you first layed your eyes on it was everything crystal clear?

Like Windows 8 or not, you can't honestly say this type of video is a fair assessment. It's some form of comedy at best.
