Using Windows 8

Hi, I have downloaded and installed a copy of Windows 8 on one of my PCs; but I find one aspect of it highly unintuitive and difficult to use. How do you close down an application after you have launched it from the Start screen? I have not yet figured out how to do it, except to launch the task manager and kill off the application form there! I hope there is a better way of doing it than that.

I have the same problem with closing down the whole PC. The only way I have figured out how to do it is to do a ctrl+alt+del, and shut it down from menu that comes up from that. Again, I hope there is a better way of doing it than that. There are many aspects of it that appear to be very unintuitive like this at the moment. I hope it will get a lot better over time.

I don't have a touch-screen at the moment, so I am not using a mouse to control the PC.

You don't need to close applications by design I think, when you stop using an app it goes in to suspend mode and doesn't use any resources.
To close down PC, move the curser to the right bottom corner, click settings and click the power button in the right bottom pane, select shutdown.
EDIT: Ctl+Alt+Del method is also recommended by other members.

From the Start Screen, using the keyboard: Windows key+I, Shift+Tab, Spacebar, then select Restart or Shutdown with arrows.
From Desktop, using keyboard: Alt+F4, Enter (for shutdown); down arrow, Enter (for restart).

It may seem trivial, but I like that Restart is one down in the Alt+F4 shutdown menu, instead of up past logoff, etc in the Win7 menu. Handy.

I just click my user tile in Metro and select "Log Off"

The next screen, if you double click, rolls away (up) and, in the lower right hand corner once you click on the power button icon, gives you the option of shutting down.

Though I have to admit Brummyfan's method is even more succinct. Thanks, Brummyfan! :)
