Windows 8 Preview VM crashes on Upgrade

Hi all,

I've been running Windows 8 for some time on a VMware Fusion virtual machine on my 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2GHz, 8GB RAM, OS X 10.8.1) without any problems.

Recently I upgraded to the new version (5.0.1) and was prompted to upgrade my VM. I tried this, but the dreaded dpc_watchdog_violation kept popping up, effectively causing an infinite restart loop. I stopped the VM and when I reopened it, I chose 'not upgrade' which opened the VM normally as before.

I installed the tool and grabbed some info, attached below. Thanks for your help in advance! :thumb:

Cheers,

gautsch

I use VMware Player 5 on Windows and those problems never occurred to me.
Sorry no Workstation or Fusion but the same general settings should apply since it's the same version.

If it's a VM setting problem it should be fixable.

However, here on Player, there is no way to update the vm version automatically like in Fusion or Workstation, but you can manually update it:

-First stop the VM,

-Edit the vmx file of the VM:
Code:
config.version = "8"
virtualHW.version = "9"

That's it
ONLY the second line here needs to be a 9 the first one is an 8.

Upgrade complete, install the new tools from the VM.

Works here.
