XP VM under Windows 8 shows network cable unplugged

I'm not much of a VM expert. I have a couple of win7 systems running a WinXP VM that I installed manually, in all those cases, the virtual network has always just booted up and worked. Under Windows 8 Pro-RTM, I did a XP VM that I loaded myself (versus an XP mode) and it loads the virtual network adapter but it reports that the cable is unplugged

I'm not clear on what this means. Obviously, it's a VM so there is no cable to plug in. I'm guessing I'm suppose to match that Virtual Nic to the regular (aka Host's) NIC but I'm not see any options to do so.

On the same system I run windows 7 Ult and a XP install and the network loads up on boot.

    Any guesses here?

    Thanks

    Dale

    Hi there

There are too many possibilities here because we don't know what VM program you're using:
Virtual PC, Hyper-V, VirtualBox, VMPlayer/Wokstation, Parallels, others?...

    Thanks

    Ok thanks for the info.

In Win7, where your VM's have network, there is no HYPER-V only Windows 8 has it.
So I suppose you're talking about Virtual PC in Win7 and Hyper-V in Windows 8? They are not the same and hyper-V is more advanced.

I've also heard other people having problems configuring the network in Hyper-V (it's not really like in Virtual PC).

I'm also no expert in Hyper-V but that network should be fixable for people like us.

Have yo looked at these tutorials?
Hyper-V Create Linux Virtual Machine in Windows 8
Hyper-V - How to Use in Windows 8

It seems not all OSes support the virtual network driver.
That cable unplugged thing means the virtual cable (yes there is one but it's not physically there) and doesn't look like a serious problem.
If you go with the machine online (and maybe says cable plugged), try to see if you can browse the internet and then there is no problem at all.

    Regards
    Hopachi

After I got it installed, the problem I had next, was it allowed the VM to access the net, but the host machine could not longer access anything. I tried a few reboots and un-installed and re-installing of Hyper-V and then just for giggles, I did a complete power off and when it booted up, it worked has expected. I kind of expected the process to be even easier than windows 7 (which is pretty darn easy), but for some reason they opted to make it a little more difficult.

I'm not sure if that's normal\somewhat expected or not. Guess we'll see if a patch comes out for it after the official release.

Thanks for the help. Now on to the next problem!
