Hyper-V connection sharing kills my host's connection

I'm using a setup where I have an ethernet connection on my host (Windows 8.1) set to share with a Hyper-V internal switch, then my VM (Windows Server 2008) connects to that. It works for a while (i.e. I can connect to the internet on my VM), but then not only does it stop working, it also kills my host's connection and I have to restart my machine. It doesn't leave any errors in either machine's event log when it happens.

And to clarify, when I say a while, it's not really any specific amount of time. Sometimes it happens as soon as I log on to the VM, and sometimes I can connect to my VPN and work for as long as 5-10 minutes. Can't seem to find any common cause for it happening.

To clarify further, when I say kills the connection, I should probably point out that the connection continues to display as "connected to the internet" in the network and sharing center. It just doesn't work (won't open any URLs, Skype goes down, etc.)
