Hello to everyone. I installed Windows 8 RP in virtualbox (my host os is Windows 7) but every time I am running my virtual machine the green light of my web camera is on. Why is that?

I suppose it's a 2.0 usb device since a 3.0 one would be unsupported in VBox for now. Well 3.0 is backwards compatible so maybe I'm wron on this one.
It means that VirtualBox detects it but it should only turn on if you have added a filter to it in VBox:

If your usb list is empty like this screenshot then I'm afraid that your camera and VBox don't go along pretty well:

What I mean is that VirtualBox doesn't support 100% of the USB devices on the market.
I also have a cheap 2GB usb stick that always blinks but remains undetected for host and guest as long as VBox is on.
Some other lexmark printer was only half supported in VBox: scanning worked, printing not (or printing worked and scanning not ,depending of the driver version)

1.0 usb is by default supported.
For usb 2.0 (like in the screenshot) you'll need the VirtualBox Extension Pack: http://download.virtualbox.org/virt...lBox_Extension_Pack-4.1.16-78094.vbox-extpack
For this one in the link, you need the latest VirtualBox 4.1.16.

Using an older Virtualbox like 4.0.6 - 4.0.something else in this range has some regression bugs that gives errors to all usb devices (avoid this).

If nothing helps just unplug the cam or disable usb support (uncheck the checkboxes you see in the screenshot)
So there is a chance that it's VirtualBox's fault but just check this tips to make sure.

I hope you'll fix the problem

Thank you for answering me. I installed the extension pack but my web camera continues to be on during virtualbox.

I can not at all uncheck the checkboxes. (see screenshot)

There seem to be some problems. Like I said, something like this happened back when I was using 4.0.6.

I hope the VM was turned off. You cannot uncheck those boxes unless the VBox machine is turned off.
You also need to install the extension when all machines are turned off.

Which version of Virtualbox are you using?
Are there any errors or warinings from within VirtualBox?

File -> Preferences -> extensions:

In this example VirtualBox 4.1.12 + extension pack 4.1.12 is used.
The versions have to match to assure best compatibility.

I recommend the latest version (by the time of writing: 4.1.16 for both packages)

A clean reinstallation can help if nothing else worked:
- remove the currently installed extension pack
- remove (uninstall) VirtualBox
****important---> if you allready used a couple of olders VirtualBox installs on your system (dating back from version 4.0.X or 4.1 beta ...) this step is recommended:
- go to your Windows directory in system32 and search for *vbox* (some old left-over VirtualBox drivers are here) and remove all the found ones that say vbox (this last step has to be executed properly and not deleting something else, be careful).

If you're still not sure of this workaround post some info about the VBox and the extensions you're using.
