Hey guys,

This is the first time using the forum so I apologize if this has been put in the incorrect place. My brother recently installed Hyper V Server 2012 r2, which boots up everytime I start my laptop. I just want help in how to completely remove the software and help get back my Windows 8. Neither me or him know how to get back to windows 8.

Thanks in advance guys.

Well, you must have a bootable Windows 8 DVD or USB. Go to the BIOS settings, select to have the DVD or USB device as first device. Then it should say "Press any key to boot from CD or DVD..." if you have a DVD or it will show the OEM or Windows logo directly (USB). When you are prompted for the installation type, choose Custom. Make sure you have backed up your files. Delete every partition of Disk 0 and then choose the Unallocated Space to install.

I hope this helps you.

Hi Almobrah, welcome to the Eight Forums.

Please before doing anything so dramatic as the member 7Enter told you above, here are a couple of things to check:

First, is the old Windows 8 still installed on the laptop? I mean did your brother wipe the hard disk and install the Hyper-V Server replacing the Windows 8, or might it be that he installed it on another partition? If so it might be enough to edit the boot files, to enable a boot menu showing the selection, either to boot to Windows 8 or to Hyper-V Server. If this is the case then we could boot you to Windows 8 and you could then remove the Hyper-V Server installation.

I will ask other members with more knowledge on how this can be done to post here. In the meantime check this tutorial at our sister site the Seven Forums, it tells you how to edit your boot entries and boot menu by yourself: BCDEDIT - How to Use - Windows 7 Help Forums

Secondly, if you have not removed it on purpose you laptop should have a so called recovery partition which allows you to do a factory reset, put the laptop back exactly as it was when you bought it. Because this option removes all your personal files and software you have installed, it should only be done when we have first checked if your old Windows 8 is still there, just needing a boot menu entry to get booted.
