I am somewhat annoyed by the unfamiliar term...... Metro.

Windows Runtime Environment (WinRT) is the new development which is the basis of Metro.

Metro can simply be thought of as the Start menu and the things it does, along with the Charms bar and the things it does.

The term 'Metro' is simply being used to describe a way of designing things, in the case of Windows 8, it's currently the Start Page and the tiles. The design itself is based on typography (fonts/Symbols) and various types of sign, usually found in places like airports, train stations etc,. hence 'Metro' (Metro means Metropolitan and is used to indicate a mode of travel, The Metro)
