I have a laptop which is my main computer with Windows 8.1. My desktop has Windows 7. I was thinking about putting the beta version of 10 on a virtual machine on my desktop. But I read somewhere that it should not go on a virtual machine and that I should just install it over Windows 7 on my desktop. I'd rather not install it over Win7 so what's your thoughts on the virtual machine?

I have Win 10 installed in VMs on several machines. Works great. Don't know where you read that it shouldn't be done as it's a great way to test out new OSes. You can use free software like VMWare Player, VirtualBox or even Virtual PC on Win 7 or Win 8. If you have 64-bit Win 8 you can setup a VM using the included Hyper-V.

Thanks, Bruce I'm glad to hear that. I do have Win8 on a 64 bit machine with 8gig of RAM. As far as VMs are concerned, is there an preference that you have for the different ones?

Since you have 64-bit Win 8 with 8G of RAM, I would go with Hyper-V. It has some nice features and is integrated well with the OS.

For beginners with VMs, I'd recommend VMware Player. Also for the ease of use to setup.
But forget about Virtual PC, that's an oldie that probably won't run W10.

Yeah, you're probably right about Virtual PC, I haven't actually tried to setup a Win 10 VM using it so it may not work. I have used VMWare Player, VirtualBox and Hyper-V to create Win 10 VMs. VMWare may be easiest for a beginner as you say but I still think Hyper-V is the way to go on 64-bit Win 8. About testing Virtual PC: me neither, haven't tried it yet, but keep in mind that it supports only 32bit guests.

Hyper-V: That's more like it. And great tutorial!

Actually, I made a mistake when I said I have 8 gig of RAM installed. I do have 8 on my laptop but on my desktop where I'm going to put on a VM machine I have 4gig installed. So I'm going to go with VMWare.

I believe you said your desktop is running Win 7 anyway so Hyper-V is not an option. VMWare Player is probably your best choice.

vmware gets my vote, i detest Hyper-V.
