I have a windows vista laptop which is too slow for vm ware win8 virtual machine. I was wondering if I can make a dual boot entry using easyBCD linking it to the vm in my C drive?

you can't boot from a VM, you need a host

Ok thanks
Can i create a VHD in vista. I cant see an option in disk managemet like win7. can it only be done within cmd on booting win8 boot media?
Sorry I dont know that much about this, i have set up dual boot on win 7 before with partitions but it led to complications so i would prefere vhd if possible.
Thanks

thanks for the reply brink
sadly i wont be able to boot a vhd created in vm ware, it says so at end of your form link and i have vista home premium anyway so I dont think I can boot any type of vhd.
So, is creating another partition the only option for me?

No it isn't. Use vBox - a lot easier. See post #4.

i tried vbox and it wouldnt install win8, so i used vm ware player. my laptop is too slow for virtual machines, sometimes (sorry most of the time) vista lags on its own (but i was still surprised how good win8 ran in vm but its just not fast enough for any proper use) so it has to be a dual boot for me.
also my laptop has a good enough spec and is very well capable of running win8, the lag is just a vista installation problem i think.

my laptop is HP G70 with 32bit vista, 3GB ram, intel core 2 duo

Please help me

What was the problem with vBox. I use that since years (also on Vista) and never had any major problems - just little glitches. But it works with Win8 and Ubuntu right now. I also made the Win7 Beta in vBox and then the host was Vista.

I cant remember exactly, i tried it a few weeks ago, it refused to install but ill find out exactly tomoro as its a bit late in my side of the world :)
But still even if it worked my computer is deffinetly too slow, it couldnt be too different from vm ware
The start menu lags and when i try a game like cut the rope it gives me a message saying my device is too slow. Even my old slow 600mhz android phone could do that without any prob

You have to give it enough RAM. Since you have only 3GB, I would split it 50/50 between the host and the guest. And 25 to 30GB dynamic disk space. I have used vBox on a 1.8GHz duo core CPU and it worked conveniently.

Games though are probably out of the question. Don't forget that your phone works with a RISC CPU. That is a completely different story. Cannot compare apples and oranges.

It is possible to boot from a VHD under Vista but you'll need access to a Windows 7 DVD, as you'll have to replace some of the Vista boot files to support VHD booting.

i gave it 25GB and 50/50 and then almost all my ram and it is still too slow in vm ware
anyway vm box say this when i start it up, VT-x/AMD-V hardware acceleration is not available on your system. Certain guests require this and will fail to boot without it

i have already said my computer is to slow for vm, at least with vista as host, so vm is NOT good for me
please dont try to help me fix this vbox problem because I know it couldnt be much better that vm ware and anyway even if it was fast enough i dont like it, i can fullscreen with some black margins, which the mouse can go out on, so therefore its almost impossible to use app multi task or acess the other menu on right side

so I dont want to use a virtual machine, tried and didnt like
but still tanks for trying to help!!

So vista does not support vhd dual boot, my computer is too slow for a vm

is the only other option to partition my C drive and install there, vista home premium supports dual boot like this doesnt it?
if so, can the partition be dynamic

i dont know about messing with bootloaders, dangerous i think. would replacing it make vista start up faster?

It won't have any impact on Vista boot time, it simply enables the an ability, which Vista doesn't natively support. That aside, if you're not confident making these kinds of change, I'd suggest using more conventional means, such as dual booting. There are plenty of free, third-party partitioning utilities, that will let you rearrange, divide and create partitions without loss of data - always backup anyway - or you can also use the built-in tools.
