Solved Can you put windows 8 on Virtual PC

I am running windows 7 ultimate sp1 with virtual xp mode.
I want to know if i can create another virtual for windows 7 when it comes out in "Consumer Release" to test it out.
Will i be able to do this?
If i do not have enough ram ( I have 512 designated to xp mode) I can remove the xp mode and put in Windows 8. This is a test computer and there is no real reason to have xp mode. I downloaded it to see how it would work when downloading instead of it coming with a computer.
the computer has 3 gigs of ram.
Thanks

I run Oracle VM Virtual Box with main system Windows 7 64 bit and virtual drives for XP /Windows 8 and Linux.
Much easier on resources and you can use variable levels of memory.
However I have 16 GB Ram.
You have enough memory with 3gb in total of which you can use 1-1.5 gb for the virtual drive, which is accessible for the main system when Virtual Box is not in use .

I also have Win 8 installed in an Oracle VM Virtual Box - much better to deal with than any other IMHO.
https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads
You'll also need the Extension Pack for additional configuration options.
Note: You can't run two Virtual Machines simultaneously without problems so close your other one before dealing with this one.

I meant running two separate virtual boxes not two systems on one VM. I have Virtual PC w/XP on my test rig plus Oracle VB w/Win 8 and although I can run them both at the same time I find everything is too slow so I avoid having both on at the same time. I guess every machine is different.

I cannot get the virtual box to install. It goes 3/4 of the way and just sits. I was sitting for 3 hours and nothing finished. I tried to cancel it but it would not cancel so i had to kill the process. It took down my internet so i rebooted then all was fine but it did not install. I was using the latest one 4.1.18. I tried this 2x to no avail.
I am running a amd x64 processor running 32bit Windows 7Ultimate Sp1
Got any ideas how to get the install to finish?

Try updating XP to what it should be...SP3, maybe that would help. Although Oracle's data shows all service packs are supported.

Did any of you that run Win8 in vBox get the screen resolution better than 800x600? For Ubuntu I get a full screen resolution (22" screen), but not so for Win8 although I have the extension pack and the guest additions. I also gave 3GBs (from a total 8GB RAM) to vBox. Everthing else worked fine but with such a small screen it is no fun.

Hi WHS,
I found the same thing, then loaded the relevant Video driver (ATI in my case) in the guest machine and it then allowed res to go to 1280.

I tried installing my nVidia driver but it refused to install even in compatibility mode with Window 7 but my resolution can go up to 1600 X 1200 anyway with the generic driver. I have it set to 1152 X 864 for convenience when with working with the host system.

I had trouble installing the driver too. I was able to set it to a higher resolution, but then parts of the screen diasappearted and I could not see the taskbar any more. Could that be because I have set the DPI to 125% - which was on my laptop. On my desktop where I have the DPI set to 150% I do not have that trouble with Ubuntu.
I would try it on my desktop but Ubuntu plus Win8 is a bit heavy for my 60GB SSD. I still have 30GBs free on my SSD, but another virtual partition would stretch it.

I found if I set anything higher than the res I set or to a higher DPI I had to use a scroll bar in eother direction to see the whole screen so I just left it as I previously described.
