If the program is quicken willmaker 2012, then I found that the problem is with the installer program, not the application itself. I copied the installed directory from c:\program files\quicken willmaker plus 2012\ on the drive from my old XP machine to c:\program files (x86)\ on my win 8 PC and added a shortcut to qwp.exe - the willmaker application then works fine under windows 8.

If you no longer have your xp drive image maybe you have a friend with an xp machine where you could install it, then copy it.

    Good luck!

If it's the installer, then one more thing that's worth a try is to uninstall it and try running the installer in Safe Mode?

Also try setting the compatibility options on the install program (setup.exe or whatever) before you install it, as well as on the program itself.

Thanks for all the replies. I finally installed the VMware program and installed XP on that. Then I installed the program that wouldn't run in XP compatible mode. It worked great. This seems to be the same as a dual boot system without the boot. I still have a lot to learn about virtual machines. It was just a challenge to get it to run. I don't see why the put the compatibility mode thing in there if it won't work. Thank all of you for the help.

    Hi there
just a suggestion to all those wanting XP mode on W8 -- there is a thread somewhere about being able to extract the XP system from XP mode (or convert it to a VMware VHD). Then simply run it as a full XP Virtual machine using VMware's vmplayer.

Performance wise and in every way this is STREETS ahead of running XP mode (VMware player is FREE) and the video etc are far far better than with the old XP mode.

This VM by the way is already activated unlike installing a brand new VM from an XP install system.

    Hello Jimbo,

Any illegal modifications like that would violate the EULA for XP Mode since it's only freely available to install in Windows 7 Professional, Ultimate, and Enterprise.

Thus, this is not allowed to be discussed.
