Hi there
I had no probs installing with V 4.0 / Rel 8.0 Workstation on W8 x-64 dev preview edition so I'll hold off 4.01 for the time being. !!!
Note again on W8 x-64 (or W7 x-64 too) you need to add your user to the __vmware__ group or you can only run it in "Administartor mode". (Two underscores each side of vmware).

Brink I was getting the same message yesterday after updating to 4.0.1 but the VMware tools now download and install normally through either Virtual Machines tab > Update VMware Tools or File tab > Player preferences > Download all components now.
Note: Running Win 7 Pro 64 bit (host) with XP Mode and Windows 8 Developer Preview 32 bit (guests)

64-bit Windows 7 Ultimate & Windows 8 Consumer Preview
It's starts to install them now for me as well on a 64-bit Window 8, but it gets to 65% and doesn't go any further. I'll do some more testing later tonight though.

Powered on the VM and then did Update Vmware tools from the Menu bar on the VM not from the prompt on the bottom right hand corner of the screen where it said click here to update vmware tools.

64-bit Windows 7 Ultimate & Windows 8 Consumer Preview
Hello Kynix,
Sorry, but no since installing VMPlayer affects the system. A standard user will not be able to install a program that runs elevated or affects the system without having to provide the administrator's password.
