I am creating an image vhd using windows 7 Enterprise booting from USB to install Windows 8.
The laptop is a 64 bit machine. I do create the image but when I try to customize and format the disk it generates the above error. I haven't successfully found a forum that will point to me what is causing the error. I do notice the volume partition is create as raw. when I try use the UI custome option or I use the dispart command format fs=ntfs it won't allow me to reformat the it. ANy clues....

Try to make a new VHD with the same size, empty partitions and use that one instead. Should be a quicker fix.

I read that article too. The partition of the of the host machine (win 7 entreprise is healthy). I also use the bootable USB drive for a PC and it work. The only the difference it was a 32. Can not get it to work in the win 7 64 laptop.
Bitlocler is disabled and locality is decimal in reference to this error. I guess I will have to re-install the Windows 7 on the target machine and see what happens.

Very strange, It's possible the mix of 32bit and 64bit can be the blame but I never tried you method out, it might be reproducible.

The reinstall you mention might do it.
Since I don't have any other ideas, I wish you good luck in solving this issue.
Welcome to the forums, by the way. :)

I went in use diskpart to format the VHD file..... I noticed I couldn't partition the space allocated by the VHD file and when it tries too partition the raw space in just detach the VHD file.
