Hyper-V host network connection issue

I've been using Hyper-V since Win-8 launch day. I run a Windows 2008 SQL Server VM for app development support, as well as an XP Machine and a couple Linux machines for various testing purposes.

This has all been working great until this weekend. The Win 8 machine lost its network connection, and after more than a day of troubleshooting what the issue was, I figured out that un-installing Hyper-V fixed the problem. I've now since narrowed that down to the Virtual switch.

If the virtual switch is set to External, no network access for either host or VMs. If I change to Internal or Private, the Host can access the network (of course the VMs cant)

Nothing has changed as (except a new router that I bought before I figured out it was HyperV) that would affect the network configuration of my system as far as I can tell.

I desparately need to start getting some work done, but my work depends on an internet connection and my VMs! My next step will be to reinstall windows, but I REALLY don't want to do that!

Thanks in advance for any useful advice.

Have you tried to delete the external switch and create a new one? Or, in case you have two NICS for instance an additional wireless, create a new external switch using that other NIC?

Yes, I've deleted and re-created the virtual switch. I've also uninstalled / reinstalled Hyper-V. Everything works fine, until I configure an External switch. At that point, I have no network access at all. Nothing shows in ipconfig, can't ping any local resources, and the network taskbar icon has a yellow triangle.

If I change the external switch back to an internal one, network access returns to normal.

Could you please post screenshots of your network connections? Both Get-NetAdapter output in Powershell and Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network Connections.

Well that was interesting. When I changed the VS from Internal to External to grab the screenshots, the computer froze on the configuring adapter process when clicking apply. I ended up having to uninstall and reinstall hyper-v to get it to work again.

Anyway, back to square one. With VS set to external, no host network access. change to Private or Internal and network access restored.

OK, thanks for the screenshots.

The switch is up and running, as seen in Powershell screenshot, but it is not connected as shown in Network Connections; when connected it should show the network name instead of Enabled:

2013-05-12_233939.png

The NIC itself should only show Enabled, not be connected, as it is only there to allow virtual switch to pass through. In your case NIC is connected, switch turned on but not connected.

What happens if you right click vEthernet (Hyper-V Ext) in Network Connections, do you see Connect in context menu?

There is no connect option on the context menu. I've lost all network connectivity now regardless of what the VS is set too. Replying to this from my phone.

A suggestion, something I would try:

  1. Disable Hamachi connection
  2. Disable Hyper-V switch
  3. Disconnect Ethernet cable
  4. Reboot
  5. Reconnect Ethernet
  6. Check that network connection (Internet) on host OK
  7. Enable Hyper-V switch
  8. Check if network connection OK (host and guests)
  9. Enable Hamachi connection
  10. Check if network connection OK (host and guests)

No change. I get network access back by uninstalling hyperv completely, then reinstalling. As long as the VS is not external, it works. If I change it between internal and external more than a few times it will eventually lock up and I have to reboot via the reset button.

I'm beginning to suspect a the NIC driver or some other hardware issue.

Me too. As your screenshots revealed, you have the switch enabled but not connected whereas the NIC seems to be connected, when it should be exactly the opposite, NIC enabled but not connected allowing the connected switch to pass through.

Do you have a spare NIC to test?

Just an idea:

What if you create a new local administrative user account, log in to that account and try to use your virtual machines from it?

I tried the second admin account with the same group membership, but no change. The only other option I have for a nic is a USB WiFi stick, I'll try it later when its not being used for doing home work. In the meantime, I'll try different drivers.

OK. It's past 1 AM here, in an hour or so I will sign out but I am back tomorrow afternoon CET, early morning your time.

Before testing the USB WiFi, disable Hamachi, NIC and switch.

After a few more hours of messing around, I bit the bullet and did a Windows 8 Refresh. Everything works just fine now, except I have to reinstall everything.

However I'd still like to figure out what went wrong so I can fix it if it happens again.

An understandable solution. Let's hope it will continue working for you.

Not knowing about your backup strategies, here's a few useful links to tutorials. A recent restore point or system image would have allowed you to restore system to a point before the issue started. Faster than reinstalling all software and virtual machines.

With Windows 8 native tools:
System Image with free edition of Macrium. Tutorials at Seven Forums, procedure is the same in Windows 8:
This tutorial about virtual switches might be useless for you as you seem to know them pretty well but adding it anyway:
Good luck.

Hey guys,

I'm having the exact same problem as Kerberos42. I just installed Hyper-V on my Win 8 computer this morning, and when I set up the vSwitch and configured it as External, I lost all network connectivity. IPCONFIG lists no adapters, Ethernet and vEthernet adapters both show Enabled but not connected.

I really don't want to go the Win 8 refresh route as I have a lot of custom applications installed and I'd rather not set everything up again. Just wondering if anyone else has seen this thread and found a solution.

Thanks!

Greg
