Playing win95 games in win8 pro 64

I'm trying to play some old favourites and have been doing some research into the best way.

I was tempted to buy a copy of win98 off eBay but would prefer to do this for free.

I was thinking I could use hyper v to set up a virtual machine. then install Linux, then wine in it.

Not really used Linux before but happy to give it a go. Would this solution work?

I don't need Internet access for the games and have them on disk

Hi there
why not use the "Classic Games" from W7 on your Win 8 Host -- you can install them (The Win 7 ones like Spider solitaire, Chess Titans, Hearts etc) on Win 8 and they are much better than the W8 stupid ones from "The Store".

There's links to how to do this over the forum.

If you want to use Virtual Machines that's fine --always a good learning tool either - but if you just want the games then you CAN install the Windows 7 games on Win 8. (You need to grab the install file though - links I think are in the tutorial -).

Here's just a few I have running -- the classic games are much better than the stupid Metro ones from the store.

Cheers

Hi, thanks for the reply. It's not really the built in games I'm trying to play.

I have some really old games from that era, such as sega rally championship, carmageddon 2 and commandoes.

Any advice on getting these to work?

Hi there
Why not install Windows98SE using VMware player (Free). The VM player has a nice wizard to guide you in setting up the VM.

You can source copies of Win98 quite easily - remember though if you get one from ebay some copies of Win98 are UPGRADE software and the install will look for previous versions of Windows on your machine so get the full RETAIL copy. - You only need a serial number --no activation is required on any Windows stuff pre XP. The serial number is sufficient.

It's unlikely though that far back whether IE will still work etc but I'm sure you don't want that VM for Internet access so should be fine.

I would agree with Jimbo here, as Windows that are made pre-Windows 2000 are considered abandonware.
You may download it free of charge.

Hi there
PM me and I'll send you a drop box link with it on -- Copy of Win98SE -- I've never actually used it so as far as I'm concerned I'm not breaking any EULA. It's "Brand New".

It's not a huge download BTW. I'm watching CHELSEA FC vs WEST HAM via an Albanian Proxy at the moment (2-0 to Chelsea) -- not unbelievably on the UK's sky sports channel -- but the Albanian channel actually has commentary in ENGLISH !!! so I'll do it after the game. Just finishing Half time.

PM me if you want the link.

Cheers

Hi there
It should work fine on VMware -- here's a screenshot of mine working -- took 8 mins to install -- I remember when W98 was on a REAL machine it took nearly AN HOUR !!!.

IE also works -- ensure you set it up to connect via a LAN otherwise it will look for a MODEM !!!!! (Wotizit ??). Not sure you'll get good rendering on some sites though -- although W98 works just fine.

If you want to read NTFS files from W98 load this software (free) into your W98 VM

DiskInternals NTFS Reader for Windows 95, 98, Me

Have fun.

I've also got Windows Me and Windows 95 OSR2 (That's the second edition of W95 rather like W98 SE) if anyone is interested.

Office 97 (Pro) runs fine on these VM's BTW.

Cheers

Windows 95 OSR2 supports FAT32, right?
Still got an OEM-copy of Windows 95 OSR2, with the book itself.

Hi there
I think it has to be the OSR2 OEM rel 2.1 version of W95.

Note that if you install Windows 95 on any VM except Hyper-V and Windows Virtual PC, make sure you disable Hardware acceleration on the particular VM, or the windows 95 may not boot (gets the IOS protection error).
