    Oracle VirtualBox on windows 8

    Hello all,

Has anyone had any problems with virtualBox running on windows 8 pro 64bit. I first installed it 2 weeks ago and I had no problems.

At the weekend I decided to set up my virtual machines from my Vista install and some of the older ones didn't work so I decided to uninstall and reinstall VirtualBox.

I checked that the version I had was still the latest version and reinstalled it.

Last night I had problems with my computer hanging at the windows 8 desktop screen for 2-5 minutes before I could open Internet explorer straight after boot up. This was with VirtualBox not running so I presume it's one of the drivers causing the problem.

It seems strange that it was ok until I reinstalled it.

I'm not sure weather to reinstall it again or wait for another update, anyone else using it?

    Thank

    Tony

The latest version should work fine. Just make sure VT-x (Hardware Virtualization) is enabled in the BIOS.
Without that, I had some issues on i7 and besides there were glitches on dual cores as well.
Once I had a crash on the VM Manager but didn't happened again. I even tested a custom build of VBox OSE and worked pretty well.

VirtualBox interface looks ugly on Win8

If you're using VBox on Windows 8 Pro then you'll need to make sure Hyper-V is disabled from the OS features.
After all this and you still have issues, you could give VMware Player a try which is also free for personal VM usage.
It is very stable (I don't work for VMware) and didn't crashed so far (VT-x also has to be enabled when available in BIOS or CPU).

VMware Player: Run Windows 8, Chrome OS on a Virtual PC

VMware Player - Install Windows 8

But VirtualBox was tested on 3 pc's in my case and it should work fine even on Windows 8 (the latest of course, VBox 4.2.x).
You'll better install the VBox extension pack as well.

    Good luck

Thanks for the advise, will VMware run my current Virtual Box machines and Microsoft VirtuPc machines. What about older versions of Windows like Windows 95, 98 and ME?

    Thanks

    Hello Tony,

Yes, it sure can, but you'll also need to download and install the free VMware vCenter Converter to use to convert the other virtual machine to the VMware format.

The link below can help show you more about it.

VMware vCenter Converter, Convert Physical Machines to Virtual Machines

    Hope this helps,

Excellent, would you recommend it over virtualbox?

    I prefer using VMware Player.

VirtualBox doesn't support additions to those OSes so the support is lacking and you'll have difficulties transferring files and moving mouse pointer across the screen.

Win 95, 98 and ME are supported under VMware Player (install tools), in fact I use Win ME myself.

To move VM's from VBox to VMplayer:

You can use the VMware Converter from Shawn's link above pretty well.

There is also another workaround if you're interested: through VirtualBox itself.

Export every needed machine (select it first) from VirtualBox as appliance:

That will make an OVA file containing all the machine's disks and settings. The OVA can then be imported in VMware Player (open virtual machine -> select the OVA file).

Then a warning/error will tell you to retry with relaxed OVF specification to be able to continue and then it will work fine.
    Converting VMs VirtualBox <---> VMware

    Cheers

Thanks guys, I'm not going to reinstall Virtulbox due to the problems it has been causing me, as VMware has been recommended by you both I'll give that a try when I've finished sorting my problems out on this PC.
