I just upgraded from from Win 7 to Win 8 enterprise and have installed hyper-v. I am now unable to add any network switches (external, internal or private). I have uninstalled hyper-v and my nics multiple times. I have also tried to adding a switch using the powershell command New-VMSwitch.

All the errors come down to a file not found error but here is the one from powershell:

New-VMSwitch : Failed while creating virtual Ethernet switch.
Switch create failed, name = '21B8292F-A4FD-4FFF-93A9-76602E2DE9EE', friendly name = '': The system cannot find the file specified. (0x80070002).
The operation failed because the file was not found.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Does this work from the Hyper-V MMC UI itself? I'm curious if it only fails from powershell.

I am an admin on the laptop but I went ahead and added me to the Hyper-v admins group. Rebooted & retested with both the UI & powershell - no change

Even though I'm admin on my laptop, I needed to add myself to the Hyper-V admin group before I could do anything in Powershell or with the Hyper-V Virtual Machine Connection. I figured it was worth a shot.

What's the error message you get from the MMC?

I didn't saw this error yet and don't have a solution at hand. Sorry.

You probably saw this link: Creating V-switches within the hyper-V environment fails which should provide a solution.

There are probably also some drivers that need to be changed after the upgrade from Win7.
I'm no expert but I recommend in upgrading the host network drivers from catalog.update.microsoft.com in case Windows Update didn't automatically did that after upgrade.
