Solved Command Prompt does not recognise Username

Hi there,

I am desperate to get a .pak file unpacked with node.js and therefore I need to run a few commands in command prompt.
It does, however, not recognise my username. My OS is Windows 8 (or 8.1, the latest version at least).

My username is like 'lohtar i.e. administrator' (first name, initials, last name, with spaces and dots) and somewhere this seems to go wrong for command prompt.

When I open command prompt it does give 'C:\Users\lohtar i.e. administrator', but when I give the next command I get:

Error: ENOENT, no such file or directory 'C:\Users\lohtar'

I am absolutely clueless what is going wrong here and I am desperate for someone who has a clue, and hopefully a solution too. I'll happily send you eternal gratitude and who knows, I may just even toss in a virtual cupcake.

What I am trying to do btw is to change the bookmark folder icon in Google Chrome, as it bugs me to no end, via this route: https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/chrome/afsEEZMrhEw

Hello Lohtar, and welcome to Eight Forums.

If you like, you could use %UserProfile% instead of C:\Users\lohtar in the command prompt. It's an environmental variable for the current user's profile folder path. :)

Hey Brink,

Thank you so much for your reply. I tried this and while it works for the first command, the second command gives the same error as I posted above. Sadly your suggestion is not the solution, I'm afraid.

Also, while I'm happy enough (thrilled, to be honest) with a workaround, it does seem odd that a username goes unrecognised, no?

Just to verify, did you use the command below for the 2nd one?

Code:
node main.js unpack %UserProfile%\Desktop\chromeskin\chrome_100_percent.pak %UserProfile%\Desktop\chromeskin\unpacked\

Yes, indeed, exactly as you posted it (except for what I assume to be a typo: profile instead of profle, also as profle gives an error too in the first command where profile works).

If you type %UserProfile% in the address bar of File Explorer and press Enter, does it open the correct C:\Users\lohtar path?

Sorry for the late response, sleeping, working and all that.

Yes, this works fine. If I do that I get the whole C:\Users\lohtar i.e. administrator

Just curious... Is windows command line like Linux in that it doesn't like spaces and/or special characters in names?

Honestly? I have no idea. I'm not really familiar with Linux but what is awkward here is that windows command sometimes does recognise it and sometimes it doesn't, though always with the same command comes the same response which makes me assume there is some logic to it, though oblivious to me.

Lohtar,

If there is any spacing in the command, then it the whole command line should be wrapped in quotes like in the link posted above by Cradom.

Cradom and Brink,

Where Brink got me started, the final tip from Cradom made it work, I just successfully did what I wanted to do (and have been trying for months). I am seriously extremely grateful, for someone with what I call 'Design OCD' this honestly irked me to no end and I got it fixed now.

If you, or whomever reads this, happens to use Chrome and wants to change icons (not just the bookmark folder), the tutorial I linked to in the original post is excellent, however do make sure you replace the right original image (the one suggested in the tutorial was not right for me, but just scroll through them). If you get your username right, it really isn't that difficult to do.

Thank you both, you made my day, and my chrome!
