Hi Everyone,

I have created a Local Account and assigned it Administrator rights. However whenever I go to change sensitive files I am presented with an 'Access Denied' message, here is an example of the message that I receive when attempting to add a host to Hosts.ini -

In addition to the account being set to Administrator (type) I have also made the group 'Administrators' the owners of the 'etc' folder, and assigned full control to this group!

Even with the above settings I am still unable to change the host entries in Hosts.ini!

If anybody knows how I can give myself the required access can you please share?

Kind Regards,

Davo

Instead of changing the folder/file permissions, open Notepad as administrator (Right-click > Run as administrator), then goto File > Open and navigate to the hosts file.

In the 'open file' dialogue box you'll have to change the file extension drop down box from 'Text Documents (*.txt) to 'All Files (*.*)' so that it shows the hosts file.

If you're running Windows Defender, it'll probably give an alert for SettingsModifier:Win32/PossibleHostsFileHijack, which you'll need to allow (as it's you who's modifying it). Also double check your entries as Defender used to automatically delete some entries (such as facebook.com).
