How to make user accounts have separate file directories?

Couldn't word the title in a way that made a lot of sense, but here is my problem. Me and my girlfriend share a windows 8 laptop and have separate user accounts. As things currently are, anytime I install a program on my account, it also installs it on hers. In the case of when these programs also create an icon or shortcut on my desktop, it does on her's as well. When my girlfriend tries to delete these shortcuts on her desktop, it also deletes them from the desktop on my account. So my question is:

Is there a way to create user accounts, in which each user may install whatever they please (games and programs. obviously not referring to windows updates and such) without either user affecting the other. If not, at the very least is there a way in which we can arrange our desktops without affecting the other's. Thank you very much in advance.
