Admin account changed to Local Account

Hi, I only have one account in my Win8.1x64 PC. It was "Admin" (Standard user was not available, grayed). I tried to change it to "Standard" using Local Policy Group and now the account changed to "Local Account" and whatever I want to do (Change UAC settings, open Local Policy Group, check disk for errors, etc etc) I get the attached message below.I can't even press "YES" as it's grayed. How can I disable UAC and return my account to Administrator? Thanks

Thanks topgun, before reading your suggested fix I tried this solution which seems to be similar to yours. All steps were successful except step 17, that screen did not show up and it booted directly into the desktop. Now it seems that the built in administrator account is enabled, I have a single account, if I go to Control Panel/User Accounts I see only one account labeled :"My username Local Account Administrator". However, I have the following issues:
1) If I click "Change your account type" it's set to "Administrator", I'm unable to change it to Standard (radio button is grayed)
2) If I click "Change User account control settings" nothing happens, the popup window to set the various levels of UAC does not show up.
3) If I go to System Protection I see that it's off and I can't enable it, the Configure button is grayed and it says:"Configuration is disabled by your system administrator"
Any suggestions? Thanks

The procedure that you've tried will not work and it is different from what I have shown. This is the confusion that lots of people have. When you restart and get to step 13 where you type in the command: net user Administrator /active:yes to turn on the Built in Admin account, you actually turn on the Admin account of Windows Recovery Environment, not your current Windows 8 account. And the SAM file you changed in under X:\Windows\System32\config when in fact you want to turn on the built in Admin account under C:\Windows\System32\config.

1) If I click "Change your account type" it's set to "Administrator", I'm unable to change it to Standard (radio button is grayed)

Why would you want to change your account type to standard ? FYI, Windows requires at least one Admin account so if the built account was turned on, then the radio button is not grayed.

Thru group policy, you turned yourself into a standard user so there's nothing you can change unless you use the procedure on my other post to sneak in and set yourself back to the Administrators group. In addition, you can also turn on the Built i Admin account.

Thanks topgun, so just to make sure, you're saying I should follow the steps outlined here? If so, where it says "xxx", I should type precisely "xxx" or x should be replaced by something else?

xxx is fine, we just rename Utilman.exe to it then later on we'll rename it back so any name would do.

UPDATE: I applied your procedure . Everything went fine until step 6. When executing the command "net localgroup administrators myuser /add" where "myuser" is my real login name, the following error is displayed:
"System error 1378 has occured
The specified account name is already a member of the group"

However, I continued and completed your steps. The results are:
1) If I click "Change your account type" it's set to "Administrator", and now I'm able to change it to Standard, however as you suggested I'm keeping the account as Administrator (the whole purpose of this)
2) If I click "Change User account control settings" still nothing happens, the popup window to set the various levels of UAC does not show up.
3) If I go to System Protection I see that it's off and I can't enable it, the Configure button is grayed and it says:"Configuration is disabled by your system administrator"
4) I cannot enter Disk Management, the following error is displayed:"Disk Management could not start Virtual Disk Service (VDS)...". Even if I manually start the Service, I still cannot enter Disk Management, with the same error message.
5) In "Programs and Features", if I try to uninstall a program it will display:"An error occured while trying to uninstall xxx. It may have already been uninstalled. Would you like to remove xxx from the programs and features list?" . If I click YES nothing happens, it's kept in the list (where xxx is most of the programs, some programs are able to uninstall).

I don't know if these are related issues. Any suggestions? Would a repair install fix all this? Thanks

You do not need to run this since your account is already existed, you just need to set your user account to be in the Administrators group.

I am confused. Why did you change your account to be a standard user ? In order to do anything, you must be an Administrator

Because I remembered Brink in one of my posts suggesting that setting an account as Administrator was nos secure, he advised setting the account as Standard. I also thought that as Standard I can still have access to most of the Administrator's permissions.

No, you are fine except now you need to set yourself back to be in the Administrators group. Standard user has very limited rights to do anything and that's why you cannot do step 2 & 3 above.

I am not sure about this, may be you misunderstood what he said. In order to make any changes to the PC, you need to be an Admin. If you let other people to use your PC then you'd set up another Standard user account and let them use this account so that they cannot make any changes to your PC or run any commands that might do some harm to it.

So how do I set myself back in the Administrators group? In User Account I'm set to Administrator, not to Standard, is that enough?
UPDATE: I just found the way and YES, my username is in the Administrator's group

Now that you are back to be a standard user, you cannot change back to be in Administrators group. However, You did turn on the built in Administrator account, You need to sign out and sign back in as the user: Administrator then in local user group, add your user account back to the Administrators group. Sign out again and sign back in with your user name, you should be an Admin now. Please do not set your user account to standard again.

As I mentioned, my user account IS ALREADY in the Administrators group, so no need to do what you mention. What I want to do is be able to set UAC control, among the errors I'm getting, if you have any hint I'd appreciate, thanks for your follow up

Hi Topgun, before you suggested it I already had done that and sfc/scannow found no integrity issues, and I ran DISM like 4 times both online and using the Windows 8.1 installation disk and it always shows the message:
"The restore operation completed successfully. The component store corruption was repaired. The operation completed successfully."

This thread is about that you changed your Admin account to a Standard User account and you did fix it to change it back. Now, if there's is a UAC problem, I don't know what else you did change in your system. What about your settings with the User Account Control ?
Open the Control Panel->Action Center->Change User Account Control Settings
Does it show the same as in the screen shot ?

That's precisely the point I was repeating in every post: when clicking on "Change User Account Control settings", nothing happens, the UAC slider dialog menu does not pop up. I even tried running UAC from command prompt as administrator and no luck either. I asked you in this thread because I thought it might be related to some user account issue. I created a separate thread for this problem here

I've already saw that and yes it was related because you changed your Account to Standard User and Now you are back to be Admin User and the option for UAC is available again.

I see a fresh Windows install coming, I hope I can fix these issues before that as a fresh install is a lot of work :(
