How Did Microsoft Transfer my Wallpapers From PC1 to PC2?

OK so I've upgraded my desktop PC to Windows 8.1 (from Windows 7) and I've also purchased a laptop on which I've installed Windows 8.1.

I used a MS account for sign in on both.
I was so surprised when my laptop changed its wallpaper to the ones I use on my desktop PC!

How did MS do this? Have the wallpaper jpg files I use on desktop PC been uploaded to MS cloud (OneDrive) and then downloaded by the laptop without me knowing? Where are the wallpapers stored on the laptop? And when I add some new jpgs to my wallpapers folder on my desktop, will they be added to the laptop too?

Finally, is there a way to break that connection so that even if I use the same ms account to sign in on both machines that my wallpapers will be different and permanently "disconnected" from the desktop PC settings?
