I have a Toshiba laptop and the update to 8.1 wants a password and to set up a user account with Microsoft email account...I don't want to setup a Microsoft account I want just a password only... How does one go by setting this up?

For what it is worth, I suggest setting up a Microsoft account.

It makes installing future updates easier.

I just make sure it's disconnected from the internet when installing and it automatically creates a Local Account instead. But I always do a clean install, so I don't know whether this will work with an update.

However, if you look at the screenshots in the following link, it shows that you can go to "Create a new account" then hidden at the bottom is a link to "Sign in without a Microsoft account."
