I have the Local security policy settings with complexity disabled but when I try to set up a new account I still get the guff about requiring 8+ chars, upper case and numbers. How can I get this removed please. Pieter

Hello Bruegel,

The Local Security Policy password requirements are only applied to a local account, and not a Microsoft account.

Microsoft accounts
require that passwords must have at least 8 characters, but up to 16 characters, and contain at least two of the following: uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. This password complexity requirement is enforced by Microsoft to help make your password more secure.

Why is MS so stingy with an upper limit of 16? Cheap? A lot of my financial accts seem to be even worse!

20-26 would be a more reasonable, secure, character limit.

PS: I'm not considering NSA security proofing at all.

Old ways, the use of Linux servers. Most banks still use AS400 systems, that restrict to a 8 bit password. As for complexity, it is easier to remember a password of 8-10 characters, then one that uses up to 32.

I use a random, non-rememberable (?) password for my MS account, then set up my Win 8 laptop to log in with a PIN instead of the password.

This is still secure because if you type the wrong PIN a few times the system reverts to requiring the password for logon, foiling any attempt to brute force it. Even if you reboot after it reverts the password requirement sticks. You have to successfully log in to turn on the PIN again.
