Can anyone explain how to retrieve both passwords?

hi all.. I've got a sony viao ultra book running win8.1. My user account is set to open with a four digit pin. Unfortunately, although I know the PIN number, I have forgotten both the user and the admin password. So I can't load any new software as it asks me for the admin password every time. Can anyone explain how to retrieve both passwords? Thanks in advance

It depends on if your administrator account is a local account or Microsoft account.

If local, then you could use an option in a tutorial below to change the password.
If Microsoft, then you could use the tutorial below to reset your password online at Microsoft.

Thanks Shawn, I'll give it a try when I get home. Meanwhile, as the window that opens requesting my Admin password contains one of my email addresses directly above the password box, can I assume this is a Microsoft account? Excuse me if a similar reply to this appears. I thought I had posted a response, but nothing at the time of writing appeared. Thanks again

That's correct. With an email address, it would be a Microsoft account.

This would be good news. It's much easier to reset your Microsoft account's password since you can do so online from any computer.

Shawn, Your suggestion has worked on my admin account and I'm not getting that window opening asking for a password anymore. Thanks a lot. I do have a problem though. Let me explain. Don't ask me why, but when I first set this PC up, I created two accounts. Can one have two administrators, one on each account? Because one of these accounts, it says Local Account on this one, I also can't get the password, although I have used my gmail address, but there is no MS account in that name so subsequently I can't repeat the previous procedure.Ive tried about 100 passwords, God knows what I used. Is there an easy fix for this? Jeez, don't let me near another PC during setup again! Lol

That's ok.

Since your Microsoft account is an administrator account, you could sign in to it on your PC, then use OPTION TWO in the tutorial below to change the password of the local user account.

Everything is now okay, thank you heaps, Shawn. Is it possible to merge the two accounts I have under one or the others name (presumably the Admin one) without losing any data? I think I need to keep things as simple as possible, because I'm not tech savvy.

If you like, you could either switch your account back and forth being a local or Microsoft account, OR have two accounts on your PC with one as a local account and the other your Microsoft account.
