load account in background while waiting for password?

Hello,

I've checked the stickys and searched and I don't think this has been answered before (it may not be possible).

There is just one user on my laptop. To maintain security I'd like to keep a password on login. However, as there is only every going to be one user, I'd like windows to load that account in the background while waiting for me to sign in. That way I could turn on the laptop, go make a coffee and when I come back type in the password and start working. At the moment after having signed in there is a good 5 minutes of background progs loading (security software, backup checker, etc etc) before I can get it to do anything useful, like open Chrome.

Obviously speeding up boot time is a bit of a separate issue, but it wouldn't be a problem for me if I could get it to boot directly to my set up, whilst retaining a password to unlock.

Many thanks for any suggestions, Jo

I can't conceive of that being possible. That would be a serious violation of basic Windows security principles.

You could just lock it.

Thanks LMiller - I don't see why it would be a breach of security principles as you can choose to have Windows boot straight to your desktop without having any security - this would keep the computer secure, but not have to wait to load all the background software.

You could just lock it.

Could you expand David - do you mean lock it manually after it has booted - I'd rather it was locked on start-up in case the laptop is nicked?

thanks both

If you fear theft, just use a password to boot up.

You could always type in your password and then go make your coffee. Should be ready when you come back :)

You could also disable any autostart jobs you don't require. Go to "start up items" on the task manager and disable anything you are happy to start manually. There may not be anything but it is worth a look.
