Solved Removing another user's password

I have a Win 8x64 system, Build 9200. There are two accounts: Administrator (me) and Joe. Joe is a standard user. I want to remove Joe's password, but that option does not exist in Control Panel. The policy to require the entry of a logon password is disabled. Various other methods, like net user from Safe Mode all fail. Thanks!

Hello Jimmy, and welcome to Eight Forums.

If Joe's account is a "local account" and not a "Microsoft account", then while signed in to your administrator account, then you should be able to use one of the options in the tutorial below to change or remove Joe's password.

http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/13315-local-account-password-change-remove-windows-8-a.html

If Joe's account is a "Microsoft account", then the password cannot be removed.

Hope this helps, :)
Shawn

Thanks, Shawn, I think that you're correct, in that it may be an MS authentication. My usual tools that operate on the SAM don't work on this account. It seems analogous to a domain logon, but I'd also think that there would be a hack if he's logging on to the local machine. The user does have an account in the SAM, and the logon screen presents "Joe." I haven't tried a test, but if it's MS authentication, would the logon screen present your email address as the user name?

If changed, a Microsoft account wouldn't show the email address.

A better way to check is to go into "User Accounts" in the Control Panel -> "Manage Accounts", and see if the Joe account has "Local account" under it or not. If not, then it's a Microsoft account.

Thanks, Brink. The Joe account does appear in Manage Accounts. In the attached screenshot, note that there is no option to change his password. Joe has an account in the registry SAM hive, which also reveals that he has a password. Of interest is that the SAM does not provide a last logon date/time, as it normally would. The SAM does contain an NTLM hash for Joe. He had to have logged in locally, at least at one time. Maybe he had a local account and then switched to a MS account. I'll have to set up a Win 8 VM and run a test.

Thanks again, Brink. That's very helpful. Joe is not a local account. The requirement to enter a password was enabled, so auto-sign-in was not allowed for users with passwords. In a test, I found that you can't enable auto-logon for non-local accounts.

Yes, you sure could set Windows 8/8.1 to automatically sign in to either a Microsoft or local account at startup using the tutorial above if wanted.

I also just noticed that, in the Control Panel and on the logon screen for Joe, it lists his email address under his user name. I should've seen that earlier!

No worries. Were you able to get it set to require passwords at sign in like you wanted?

Yeah, but I really wanted to log on as Joe to check certain settings and configs. I imagine that, even if I crack his local password hash, it won't work now that he's using the MS option.

Nope. You'll need to talk to Joe to have him sign in for you.
