Change Name on Microsoft Account & PC Username

When setting up Windows 8 64-bit Pro on the page titled "Sign in to your PC" I choose the sign into my Microsoft account as opposed to "Sign in without Microsoft Account". Big mistake. It created a username called dwmad_000 which is part of my email address used for that Microsoft account.

To amend this username to one of choice, I changed the name in my online Microsoft account and also from C.Panel created a local account. I now have both in Windows Explorer but the default one is always dwmad_000.

Any ideas how to get rid of dwmad_000 or change it permanently to First Name Last Name and sycn the 2.

    Thanks a lot

    Hello Ian,

The best way to change your "C:\Users\(user-name" user profile folder name is to create a new account and delete the old one. Be sure to back up anything you do not want to lose from your current account first.

It's a bit of a workaround, but in your case for example:

    Hope this helps,

I'll give it a go Shawn, but I just can't get my head around what Microsoft are thinking with this set-up. Apparently if I'd have created a local account first (which I have on other machines) and then linked to the online MS account everything would be fine, so why not do the same but in reverse if you create an online account first, just rename it correctly form the start, or better still ask you what you want it to be called. A plethora of people are scratching their heads with this thing.

Thanks anyway appreciate your help as always. I just hope MS are paying you for cleaning up their mess.

Normally when you create a Microsoft account the first time, it will use the "first name" you entered when you setup the Microsoft account for your user profile folder name.

What I posted is just a workaround for when it doesn't for whatever reason.

Shawn, can I now manually delete the "dwmad_000" folder, Its still there? Will I need to Take Ownership first?

If you deleted the account in User Accounts, then yes you can safely delete it. If it will not let you delete it normally, then could try taking ownership and setting permissions to do so.

If still not, then you could delete it from a command prompt at boot.
