Solved 2 step verification and account madness

Has anyone tried this yet? I think they either rolled out a broken feature or Windows 8 isn't able to handle it yet. I enabled it and I could no longer sync my passwords because it wouldn't let me trust my PC anymore. If I click the link in settings under the charms menu, it says the URL is invalid. If I look in my account settings, it no longer provides any options to trust a device. What on earth is going on? I can no longer sync any settings, not to mention I have to enter a code every single time just to log in to anything. I tried technical support, but they obfuscated access, making it a giant circular effort. I can't get to a live person to save my life. Live help redirects to self help on everything I've tried. HELP!

Hi and thanks for the reply. I went through each of the options, first removing any devices and starting over, then I used the link in the settings sync page. I also tried using the option through a browser. In both cases, the sync page still shows that my PC is not trusted and I can't sync passwords, etc.

Yes, cookies are enabled and I checked the box each time. I even tried clearing the cache and trying again. It just said the page no longer exists, only leaving the option to press "OK" which takes me back to my account page. I also tried this on the IE modern app, which gave me the same result. I check the sync menu and it still tells me to trust my PC. Could it that some part of their servers is down?

Could be, but I didn't have any issues removing and adding my PC as a trusted device several times while testing.

If you have not already, try signing out and signing in or restarting the PC to see if that may toggle it. If not try using step 3 in OPTION TWO to add your PC as a trusted PC again to see if it may work this time.

If it still will not trust your PC, then you might turn off two-step verification for now, and try again later if it is a MS server issue.

I've tried restarting, shutting down, etc. Finally, I just gave up and left it alone. I came back later today and it was magically trusted now... ? That confused me, but at least it should sync all of my settings. Apparently ignoring it did the trick, lol. In all seriousness, I truly do think it was an issue with their servers. Either that or Windows was doing something very strange.

Great news.

Microsoft had just updated "Microsoft accounts" to have the two-step verification, so there was most likely a delay with the servers being overloaded with everyone updating their trusted devices and two-step verification.

The biggest issue I have now is that 2-factors authentication (2FA) BROKE Family Safety as follow:

1). On a computer managed by Family Safety, access a restricted website
2). A pop-up box will show up asking for permission by entering the "Parent" MS account
3). Entered username and password.... "INCORRECT PASSWORD" is shown.

There is NO other edit box to enter the 2FA code. Since 2FA requires the code to be entered but there is no means to do so for Family Safety, turning on 2FA breaks Family Safety.

IF I disable 2FA, then this works.

Hello Chuck, and welcome to Eight Forums.

When using 2FA, see if using an app password with Family Safety instead may work. :)

Create or Remove App Passwords in your Microsoft Account when Two-Step Verification is Turned On

Thanks for the suggestion! I tried it and I can login to allow access to the requested website. But 2 things:

1). The App Password is a really long, random generated characters... something like aahhjjssbejtjpa (not the real one). It's very hard to remember and troublesome to enter EVERYTIME my children need access to a website that is not in the whitelist. I prefer if it will ask for the code generated by Google Authenticator. I am sure for many people, it'll be easier just to write the password down somewhere and that beats the purpose of having 2FA

2). The "Email Request" no longer works. When I click on it, it just hang.. and nothing happened.

You're welcome. Yeah, that long password is a downside when you have to try and remember it.

In your situation, it may be best to turn off 2FA.
