Solved Microsoft Account: Stuck in a loop!

New Thinkpad Twist with Win 8. I screwed up my ID and password, after working fine, I cannot log on. I got the ID figured out, but not sure about the original password, so whated to reset it.

Nothing online worked to reset it. I called Microsoft's Tech Support number (got the number from a Stapes tech). They told me they would send a temporary password to an alternative email account. I paniced trying to remember any other email addresses. I remembered setting up a gmail about 10 years ago so I gave them what I thought I remembered.

Then, I had to go through a recovery process with gmail because the ID I gave Microsoft wasn't quite right. I called Microsoft back and told them my story and the correct email address. The guy said he would "call upstairs" and give them the info and they would decide what to do. So far, two days, nothing in the gmail account.

I've gone through every on-line Microsoft pass word re-set I can find. The most common is to type in my ID/email address (**REMOVED**) and then the box with the funny letters/numbers and it says that it's wrong. I'm assuming that my ID/email (above) is correct because it takes that and then asks for the password. And I'm assuming that I can't be wrong on about 20 tries on the funny letters. So much for any assumptions I make.

I can't use the Outlook email on Win 8 or a few other programs on Win 8 until I get my account straightened out.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Tim

Thanks Shawn for the response. I went through the tutorials one more time and followed the directions but am still stuck.
There are two issues as best i can tell.

First: I can't get past the screen that has my email/ID and asks me to fill out the funny letters. Twenty five attempts and I can't be missing them all. I'm guessing Microsoft has some kind of hold on the account. It keeps saying the ID/Password is wrong.

Second: I'm waiting for Microsoft to send a temp password to my secondary gmail account. I'm also guessing that if they do, and I've been waiting since last Friday, then maybe the account will let me past the funny letters and show me a box to put that temp password in to then reset the password and get the account going again.

How do I communicate with Microsoft to help me straighten this out?

Tim

Tim,

Still stuck in loop

I appreciate your simplification of the second Tutorial but I'm still stuck. I can't get past entering my email/ID and then the captcha letters so that I get to the next screen which gives me options for sending me the new password.

If the captcha is wrong then it tells me that. If the captcha is right then it tells me the account ID is wrong.
To double check the ID I go through setting up a new account or ID and get it all filled in and it says my email is already being used.

It looks anybody could take my email address, which is public info at this point, and if then do the captcha letters right and they should be able to get the next screen. Right?

Do you have cookies enabled?

If so, then you might sign up for and create a new Microsoft account using a different email address.

Well, cookies are enabled. I guess a work around like another email address is my only other option. I assume there is a way for the Microsoft account web mail to also receive emails from my main email address???

It'll be impossible to do if it won't recognized your original Microsoft email address.

If it does, then you could link the old email address with the new account like below.

still stuck in loop

I want to check one more question. I'm assuming because microsoft has my original ID on their server, then doing a factory reset or even taking the laptop back to Staples and getting a new one won't change anything when I go to setting up an account on a new one???

I appreciate your trying to help.

If my assumptions above are correct, then I need to figure out how to jump the first level tech support at microsoft as I'm not ready to give up just yet.

Thanks

Tim

Tim,

That would be correct. Your Microsoft account is kept on MS servers. You would still need to know the correct email address for it to be able to reset it's password.

Work around stuck in loop

Well, here's the bottom line for now and I'll probably list it as resolved. My son, a computer engineer out of Michigan State (his father proudly said), beamed in on Team Viewer and had all the same (as described in the thread) happen to him. He ended up doing a new account ID so that I could get the email to work and then added my regular email as a second account which I will switch to each time.

I get that security is a big time issue, but to have to log in every time you want to use your email is not a plus for Microsoft and Win 8. There ought to be a way to set it up on your own machine to automatically log in (from that machine).

I appreciate all the help. Thanks!

Tim
