Solved Cannot log-in to other accounts at boot-up or switch users

There are other threads on this but none have provided a resolution to my problem. Running the users check indicates the administrator account exists. However, I cannot select any users except my standard windows user on boot-up, nor can I switch users from the start center, as there are no other users to select at the top right of the start center - i.e., the pix and user name do not contain other user names. The power button on settings doesn't either. When checking the task manager, there is only my own windows user name listed, so no other user to switch to. I installed various reg, bat and vbs files available for downloading on this web site without success.

I hope that there is a setting that has changed - but looking at secpol and gpedit nothing jumps out at me.

Nothing seems to correct the problem. Anyone?

Please open User Accounts in the Control Panel (icons view), click on the Manage another account link, then post back with a screenshot of what it shows. Be sure to blank out any email addresses that may be in it.

Well, from that you should have your "Douglas..." account and the built-in "Administrator" account available on the sign in screen.

When you are in the sign in screen, do you have a back arrow button at the top right corner to click to see all users to select to sign in?

If not, then you might see if disabling and enabling the built-in Administrator account may toggle it to show up on the sign in screen afterwards.

No to both, unfortunately. The only time I see a back-arrow is when I hit windows-L, and the back arrow appears for about 1 second before only my MS log-in is available. I disabled net user admin, re-booted, enabled, re-booted and still nothing.

This is a new install. I discovered the problem when I tried to update Acrobat Pro, and found that I couldn't do it under my Dugly admin account, went to look for my net user admin log-in, and there it was:gone. I'm beginning to wonder if I truly gain admin rights when I hit "run as administrator" on various programs.

I did a lot of tweeking and file maintenance yesterday without creating adequate restore points, so I'm starting to believe my only choices are roll-back or re-install. I'll wait for a day or two before deciding to do that - the missing administrator account is the only thing that I need to rectify.

Since your "Douglas..." account is an administrator, you do have administrator rights. You just have to approve through UAC when you use "Run as administrator" to apply your elevated rights.

I would recommend to try the system restore first, then possibly to refresh or reset Windows 8 if it didn't help.

I performed a system refresh and it is now resolved.
