Solved Sign in name and password

Hello
I am confused by the above.
When I was installing Win 8 from Win 7 I thought I answered the questions appropriately but my sign in name and password are the same as my Hotmail account's sign in and password.

Are they joined so that if I change the account I damage the Windows sign in?

By the same token, if I change the sign in will I damage the Hotmail account.
I would like no password but it does not seem to allow for that.
Any light you can shed would be appreciated.
Peter

Hello Peter,

It sounds like you setup a Microsoft account instead of a local account. Either will work fine in Windows 8, and you can switch your account to either one if you like without causing any issues.

A local account is the same as what you had in previous versions of Windows.

A Microsoft account uses your email address and it's password to sign in to Windows 8 instead. This allows you to be able to sync and use the same settings and such on any Windows 8 PC that you sign in to with the same Microsoft account.

The links I posted above and the related links at the bottom of them can help give you more details about these account. If you have any questions, then please feel free to ask away. :)

change to MS account re: email

Hello Shawn
I am so glad for your last comment,"please feel free to ask away." I am really trying to grasp this issue.
My concern is that you may have to change your Hotmail account or you get locked out or any number of reasons why the Hotmail account is not valid.
Does this affect the sign in process? In other words, can I sign in even if my Hotmail account is closed? if not it is scary to think I could not sign in.
I wonder if you could just use a local account, even after setting up a MS account, and still have admin privileges?
If I can do everything with the local account I would close the MS one and use just that one.

I was hoping to have a non MS sign in but reading about the local account, it seems as though you are not the admin and actually need the MS account for certain functions.
If you could clarify my concerns, I will be trying to work on the material you have given me.
After 7 decades I think I should have stayed with Win 7 but I am going to try my best to see this through.
Regards,
Peter

Hello Peter. Welcome to EightForums.

You may create another administrative account to sign in with, then delete the MS sign-in account without affecting or eliminating your email account or any account tied to the MS account. Please use Shawn's tutorials to do so.

Think of it as the MS account being the main account and all other accounts you have, such as Live, Hotmail, MSDN, Bing, etc. are tied to and included in that account. It's the MS "Cloud". Once you sign into any of those "subaccounts" you are actually signing into the main MS cloud account.

I use my Live account to sign into my PC. I find it convenient in that wherever I go in the MS cloud domain, I'm automatically signed in. e.g. My homepage in IE is Bing. I'm signed in automatically when I open it.

Hope that helps.

It's nothing to worry about.

If you would prefer to have a local account, then you could just use the tutorial below to switch your current Microsoft account to be a local account instead.

Hey Tony,

Your option would have worked, but it just would have been the long and complicated scenic route way of doing it. :p

I guess I am a bit leery right now and want to be sure so please bear with me.
I can just follow the tutorial and end up with a local account that has admin privileges but not affecting the Hotmail account, correct? Sort of the old way.

>>I edited because I achieved my goal and wish to thank you very much for the help.
