Over a week ago I set up my new computer that is loaded with Windows 8. My new keyboard had the numbers locked so when I set up my username (ksherman100@xxxxxxxx) the "100" in it was omitted. When I realized that this had happened, I deactivated the account and set up a new one with the "100" in it. However, my computer is still saying that my username is ksherman@xxxxxxx and asks me for the password. The password that I remember using does not work. I can't re-set the password because the e-mail that is generated is sent to ksherman@xxxxxxxx, which isn't a valid e-mail address for me. I can get around the problem somewhat by using the "More account settings on-line" option--there my username is listed as ksherman100@xxxxxxxx. But, I am having problems with accessing some mail, contacts, etc. I can't figure out how to get help on this... Anyone have ideas??

Thank you for responding theog! After I went through the process, I realized that it isn't the Account Name that needs to be changed..it is the associated e-mail address. It still incorrectly shows up without the "100" and requests a password ("You need to sign in with your most recent Microsoft account password". None of my passwords work with it. If I go below and click on "More account settings online", my correct e-mail address is listed under the Account Summary...

Try creating a new local user as an administrator, log in as that user, delete the wrong account, then change your local user to the correct email user account.

Hello ksherman, and welcome to Eight Forums.

The tutorial below can help show you how to change your Microsoft account's email address.

http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/9200-microsoft-account-change-email-address-windows-8-a.html

Hope this helps, :)
Shawn

Thank you for your response Brink! I have tried your suggestion but the e-mail that is listed when I go through this process is the correct email. I even tried to change it to the incorrect address (ksherman@xxxxxx) to see what would happen...I got the following error msg:"That Microsoft account doesn't exist. Enter a different email address or get a new account". I wouldn't expect it to exist since I closed that account once I realized that the "100" wasn't included. But why does it show up on the PC Settings screen under "Your account"? I have to go down to "More account settings online" to log in..

Thank you for responding drowe! However, when I tried to change the email address, as Brink suggested above, it said that the account didn't exist (I closed the account as soon as I realized the "100" was omitted). I'm assuming that I wouldn't be able to delete the incorrect one either---the only e-mail address that shows up on the update screen is the correct email address that includes the "100". So confusing!!

ksherman,

If you're email address as "@Hotmail" at the end, then that may be why. You'll most likely need to switch to an "@Outlook" or "@live" address from "@Hotmail" for it to work.

Outlook Blog - Upgrade from Hotmail to Outlook.com

[h=3]How to upgrade[/h]The easiest way to upgrade is to sign-in to Outlook.com:

  • Go to http://outlook.com
  • Sign-in with your existing Hotmail account (@hotmail.com, @msn.com, @live.com, etc.)
Important: Don't sign-up for a new account; just sign-in with your existing Hotmail account. You don't need to change your address to use Outlook; in fact, if you sign-up for a new address, there is no way to combine or merge that new account with your old account.

Hello Brink! It is not a Hotmail account. I also posted my problem on the Microsoft forum and an administrator asked for my Account Name via a private message to try to figure it out. I guess we will see what happens! Thank you!

Hi Brink! I have not heard back from the Window's administrator who asked me for my Account Name (Dec 5). I just re-sent the information that he requested. I will let you know if the problem is resolved. Thank you!

Well, the Windows administrator never messaged me back even after I e-mailed him again. I had a computer technician help me for 4 hours and we finally got the problem fixed. The resolution was along the lines of what you suggested, Drowe! We switched my account to a local account, edited the e-mail address, then switched back. Ugh! A frustrating process but ultimately I'm just glad it is fixed! Thank you Windows Eight Forums for being willing to help me!!
