How to Open and Close Tabs in Modern IE10 in Windows 8

This tutorial will show you how to open new tabs and close tabs while using modern Internet Explorer 10 in Windows 8 and Windows RT.

Note   Note
Modern Internet Explorer 10 (IE10) from your Start screen will only work if you have Internet Explorer 10 (desktop) set as the default program for your web browser, and you have at least a 1024 x 768 screen resolution.

Tip   Tip
You can switch between opened tabs in modern IE10 by either pressing Windows + Z, right clicking on an empty area in modern IE10, or swipe/flick up from the bottom of a touch screen, or swipe/flick down from the top of a touch screen, then click/tap on the tab you want to open.





OPTION ONE

To Open a New Tab in Modern IE10


1. While in modern IE10 from your Start screen, do step 2, 3, or 4 below for what you would like to do.​
2. Right click or press and hold on a URL link in a website, click/tap on Open link in new tab, and go to step 6 below. (see screenshot below)​
NOTE: It will depend on what you have your new tab settings set to for how the new tab page will automatically open to it or not.​

3. Press the CTRL + T keys, and go to step 5 below.​
4. Press Windows + Z, right click on an empty area in modern IE10, swipe/flick up from the bottom of a touch screen, or swipe/flick down from the top of a touch screen. (see screenshot below)​

A) Click/tap on the plus-button.jpg button, and go to step 5 below. (see screenshot below)​

5. Either select from your Pinned, Frequent, or Favorites sites to open one in the new tab, or type in a URL address in the address bar below and press Enter or click/tap on the arrow to the right of the address bar. (see screenshot below)​
NOTE: You can also right click or press and hold on a displayed Pinned, Frequent, or Favorites site, and click/tap on Open in new tab.​

6. You will now have a new tab open to the website.​
NOTE: If you do not have Always switch to new tabs when they are created checked in your tabbed browsing settings in Internet Options, then you will have to select the new tab (see TIP at top of tutorial) to have it open instead of it opening to the new tab automatically.​







OPTION TWO

To Close Tabs in Modern IE10


1. Press Windows + Z, right click on an empty area in modern IE10, swipe/flick up from the bottom of a touch screen, or swipe/flick down from the top of a touch screen. (see screenshot below)​

2. Do step 3 or 4 below for how you would like to close tabs.​
3. To Close a Single Tab in Modern IE10
A) Click/tap on the X button at the top right corner of any tabs you would like to close. (see screenshot below)​
B) When finished, go to step 5 below.​
4. To Close All Tabs except Currently Opened Tab in Modern IE10
A) Click/tap on the 3-dot-button.png button, and click/tap on Close tabs. (see screenshot below)​

5. Press Windows + Z or click/tap on an empty area in modern IE10 to close the address bar.​
6. The tab(s) has now been closed.​
