Office 2013 - Recover Saved and Unsaved File Versions

How to Recover Saved and Unsaved Versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2013 Files

If the AutoRecover and AutoSave option is turned on in Word 2013, Excel 2013, and PowerPoint 2013, then you can automatically save versions of your file while you're working on it to avoid losing your work if a crash, power loss, or you close a file without saving happens.

This tutorial will show you how to recover a saved or unsaved recent version of an Office Word 2013, Excel 2013, or PowerPoint 2013 file.





OPTION ONE

To Recover a Saved Version of an Office 2013 File



Note   Note
This option is for when you have manually saved Save_Button.png the file you are working on at least once, and now need to restore an automatically created recent version of the file that was saved after a crash, power loss, or you closed the file without saving happened.

For example, versions created from:

AutoSave - File versions that were created every X minutes while you're working on the file.

AutoRecover - File versions that were created when you closed without saving your current work.

1. While you have a file opened in Word 2013, Excel 2013, or PowerPoint 2013, click/tap on File (ALT+F). (see screenshot below)​

2. Click/tap on Info (ALT+I). Under Versions, click/tap on the version of the currently opened file you want to restore. (see screenshot below)​

3. Click/tap on Restore in the yellow bar at the top. (see screenshot below)​

If you had more than one version of the file available, then you could also click/tap on Compare to be able to compare the contents of the file versions.

4. Click/tap on OK to confirm. (see screenshot below)​

5. Click/tap on View and Edit Documents (Word 2013), Edit Workbooks (Excel 2013), or Edit Presentations (PowerPoint 2013) to return to normal mode. (see screenshots below)​

6. You can now continue to work on the file where you left off at.​







OPTION TWO

To Recover an Unsaved Version of an Office 2013 File



Note   Note
This option is for when you want to recover a file you have not saved yet when a crash or power loss happened.


1. Open Word 2013, Excel 2013, or PowerPoint 2013, and do step 2 or 3 below depending on if Office was able to AutoRecover the file.​
2. If Office was able to AutoRecover the file, then you could click/tap on the available file (ex: Oops.docx) in the left pane to recover it, click/tap on Close at the bottom of the left pane, and go to step 10 below. (see screenshot below)​

3. If Office was not able to AutoRecover the file, click/tap on File (ALT+F), and do step 4 or 5 below. (see screenshot below)​

4. Click/tap on Info (ALT+I) in the left pane, click/tap on Manage Versions in the right pane, and click/tap Recover Unsaved Documents (Word 2013), Recover Unsaved Workbooks (Excel 2013), or Recover Unsaved Presentations (PowerPoint 2013). Go to step 6 below. (see screenshot below)​

5. Click/tap on Open (ALT+O) in the left pane, click/tap on Recent Documents (Word 2013), Recent Workbooks (Excel 2013), or Recent Presentations (PowerPoint 2013) in the middle pane, and click/tap on Recover Unsaved Documents (Word 2013), Recover Unsaved Workbooks (Excel 2013), or Recover Unsaved Presentations (PowerPoint 2013) at the bottom of the right pane. Go to step 6 below. (see screenshot below)​

6. Select the .asd file for the Office file you want to recover, and click/tap on Open. (see screenshot below)​

7. Click/tap on Save As in the yellow bar at the top. (see screenshot below)​

8. Name and Save the file where you like. (see screenshot below)​

9. Click/tap on View and Edit Documents (Word 2013), Edit Workbooks (Excel 2013), or Edit Presentations (PowerPoint 2013) to return to normal mode. (see screenshots below)​

10. You can now continue to work on the file if you like.​
