Windows Phone 8.1 Automatic App Updates - Turn On or Off

How to Turn On or Off Automatic App Updates in Windows Phone 8.1

information   Information
The people who create apps and games for Windows Phone are constantly making tweaks and improvements, fixing bugs, or adding new features. When a newer version of an app you've downloaded becomes available, the update will be downloaded and installed automatically by default.

By default, app updates will only be installed over Wi-Fi. If you're not on Wi-Fi when an update becomes available, the update will be added to your downloads queue and will download automatically the next time your phone connects to a Wi-Fi network.

If you have an app update in your downloads queue, and it's less than 50 MB, you can choose to download it immediately over your cellular data network.

This tutorial will show you how to turn on or off automatic app updates, and turn on or off to only get updates over Wi-Fi in Windows Phone 8.1.

Note   Note
If automatic app updates is turned on, then while your phone checks for app updates, it'll automatically download and install the updates as soon as possible. If any updates for apps were installed, then you will see a notification banner and a notification in the action center from the Store app letting you know.

If automatic app updates is turned off, then you will need to manually check for and install app updates. If you pinned to Start the Store app, then you will see number on the Store tile (if pinned to Start) indicating how many app updates are available to install. If any app updates are available, then you will also see a notification banner and a notification in the action center from the Store app letting you know.

Here's How:

1. Do step 2 or 3 below for how you would like to open the Store app settings.

2. In the App list, tap on Settings. (see screenshot below)

4. Under App updates, turn on or off Update apps automatically. (see screenshot below step 5)

5. Under App updates, turn on or off Only get updates over Wi-Fi to allow updates that are smaller than 50 MB to automatically download over your cellular connection. (see screenshot below)
NOTE: The default setting is turned on.

That's it,

Shawn, do you happen to know how often Windows checks for Store/App updates? (Trying to solve a mystery over at McAfee forums regarding a mysterious every 3 hours loss of focus (from Games I'm assuming) with that software installed).

Hey Peter,

I'm afraid not. I haven't found any documentation on how often it checks in yet either.
