Taskbar - Move Location in Windows 8

How to Move Taskbar Location in Windows 8 and 8.1

information   Information
While the taskbar is at the bottom of your desktop by default, Windows 8.1 Update has added to also see the taskbar on any screen, including Start or a Windows Store app.

The taskbar is where you can switch between apps you have open, go to Start or Desktop, check the notification area, and can pin apps you use often so you can open them right from any screen. You can customize the taskbar, including the way taskbar buttons look, how they group together when you have more than one window open, where the taskbar is on your desktop, and what icons and apps are on it.

This tutorial will show you how to move the taskbar location to the bottom, left, right, or top edge on any screen in Windows 8, Windows 8.1, and Windows RT 8.1.

If you have multiple displays and set to show taskbar on all displays, then you can also move the main taskbar with a notification area and time/date on it to any display without changing your main display.

OPTION ONE

To Move Taskbar Location in Taskbar and Navigation Properties

Note   Note
This option will move the taskbar location to the bottom, left, right, or top edge on your screen.

If you have multiple displays and set to show taskbar on all displays, then this option will move the location of all taskbars to the bottom, left, right, or top edged on each screen.

1. Do step 2 or 3 below for how you would like to open "Taskbar and Navigation Properties".
2. Open the Control Panel (icons view), click/tap on the Taskbar and Navigation icon, and go to step 4 below.
3. Right click or press and hold on the taskbar, click/tap on Properties, and go to step 4 below. (see screenshot below)

4. Click/tap on the Taskbar location on screen drop down menu, click/tap on Bottom, Left, Right, or Top, and click/tap on OK. (see screenshots below)
Note   Note
If you see a Custom option, then it means that you have multiple displays set to show taskbar on all displays, and at least one of the taskbars currently has a different location than the other taskbars.

OPTION TWO

To Move Taskbar Location on Screen by Dragging

Note   Note
This option will move the taskbar location to the bottom, left, right, or top edge on your screen.

If you have multiple displays and set to show taskbar on all displays, then this option will allow you to be able to move the location of each taskbar independently to the bottom, left, right, or top edged on each screen how you like. For example, one taskbar can be on top on one screen, and another taskbar can be on the left on the other screen.

2. Click/press and hold on the taskbar, drag the taskbar to the bottom, left, right, or top edge you want on the screen, and release to drop the taskbar at that location.
3. If you have multiple displays and set to show taskbar on all displays, then repeat step 2 above for any other taskbar that you would like to move the location of on it's screen.
4. When finished, you can lock the taskbar again if you like.

OPTION THREE

To Move the Taskbar to another Display Screen

Note   Note
If you have multiple displays, then this option will allow you to move the taskbar with a notification area and time/date on it to any other screen without having to change your main display.

If you have set to show taskbar on all displays, then the taskbar without a notification area and time/date will swap locations with the moved taskbar with a notification area and time/date on it to.

2. Click/press and hold on the taskbar with a notification area and time/date on it, drag the taskbar past the screen border into the screen you want to move it to, then drag the taskbar to the bottom, left, right, or top edge you want on the new screen, and release to drop the taskbar at that location.
3. When finished, you can lock the taskbar again if you like.

That's it,
Shawn
