Hyper-V - Enable and Disable in Windows 8

How to Enable and Disable Hyper-V in Windows 8 and 8.1

information   Information
This tutorial will show you how to enable and disable the built-in Hyper Virtualisation (Hyper-V) feature in Windows 8 Pro or Windows 8 Enterprise.

You must be signed in as an administrator to be able to do the steps in this tutorial.

Note   Note
To support Hyper-V client, you must have a 64-bit version of Windows 8 Pro or Windows 8 Enterprise with a 64-bit CPU that supports SLAT (Second Level Address Translation). You’ll also need at least 4GB of RAM. Hyper-V does support creation of both 32-bit and 64-bit operating systems in the VMs.

For more info, see also: Bringing Hyper-V to "Windows 8"

Hi SirDarknight,

Welcome to the forums :)

Hyper-V is the built-in hypervisor for Windows 8/8.1 Pro and Enterprise Edition, the technology is also part of Windows Server. It gives you the ability to run multiple operating system on your computer at one time using virtual machines.

You can read in the notes Bringing Hyper-V to "Windows 8" and the following Wikipedia page for more information Hyper-V - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I hope that helps, any more questions please ask.

Cheers,
Harry

Another tip is to make a new boot entry. You can then choose on reboot whether to boot with Hyper V turned on or not.

This is very useful as if Hyper V is installed then VirtualBox or VMWare will not work. Nor will the phone emulators in Visual Studio. You get a message VT-x is not available (as Hyper-V is using it).

1. Install Hyper V as in the tutorial.
2. bcdedit /copy "{current}" /d "Hyper-V"
3. bcdedit /set "{current}" hypervisorlaunchtype off

Then you can choose when you boot if you want Hyper V or not so if you want to use virtual Box for example you pick the boot option without Hyper V.

Hello Tony,

Enabling or Disabling the Hyper-V feature alone doesn't use any more space since it's already included in Windows 8/8.1 Pro/Enterprise. :)

Yeah, Hyper-V takes a bit to get used to, but not bad at all once you do.
