Storage Spaces - Create a New Pool and Storage Space in Windows 8

How Create a New Pool and Storage Space in Windows 8

information   Information
Storage Spaces lets you group drives together in a storage pool. Then you can use pool capacity to create storage spaces.
  • Storage spaces are virtual drives that appear in Windows Explorer. You can use them like any other drive, so it’s easy to work with files on them.
  • You can create large storage spaces and add more drives to them when you run low on pool capacity.
  • If you have two or more drives in the storage pool, you can create storage spaces that won't be affected by a drive failure—or even the failure of two drives, if you create a three-way mirror storage space.
  • You will be able to connect the added drives of a storage space to another Windows 8 computer or new installation of Windows 8 to have that Windows 8 see and use the storage space in it's storage pool as well.
This tutorial will show you how to create a new pool and storage space in Windows 8 to be able to save files to two or more connected drives so that your files remain safe, even when a drive fails. All you need is one or more extra drives in addition to the drive on which Windows 8 is installed on. These extra drives can be internal or external hard drives, or solid state drives. You can use a variety of types of drives with Storage Spaces, including USB, SATA, and SAS drives.

You must be logged in as an administrator to be able to do the steps in this tutorial.

Note   Note
Storage Space Resiliency Types:

None - This simple layout stores one copy of your data, and doesn't protect you from drive failures. This resiliency type requires at least one drive.

Two-way mirror - This layout stores two copies of your data, protecting you from a single drive failure. This resiliency type requires at least two added drives.

Three-way mirror - This layout stores three copies of your data, protecting you from two simultaneous drive failures. This resiliency type requires at least three added drives.

Parity - This layout stores your data with parity information, protecting you from a single drive failures. This resiliency type requires at least three added drives.

Step1.jpg
3. If prompted by UAC, then click on Yes.
4. Check the drives that you want to add and create a storage pool with, and click on the Create pool button. (see screenshot below)
NOTE: You can click on the View files link of a listed drive to help see what is on the drive to make sure that you have the correct one.
Step2.jpg
5. Type in a name, select a drive letter, resiliency type, and size you want for the storage space, and click on the Create storage space button. (see screenshot below)
Step3.jpg
6. You now have a new "Storage Pool" of "Storage Spaces". (see screenshot below)
Step4.jpg
7. You can now close the Storage Spaces window if you like.

OPTION TWO

To Create a Storage Space in a Previously Created Storage Pool

1. Open the Control Panel (icons view), and click on the Storage Spaces icon.
2. Click on the Change settings button if not grayed (faded) out. (see screenshot below)

3. If prompted by UAC, then click on Yes.
4. In a listed previously created storage pool (ex: My Storage Pool) that you wanted to create a new storage space in, click on the Create a storage space link. (see screenshot below step 2)
5. Type in a name, select a drive letter, resiliency type, and size you want for the storage space, and click on the Create storage space button. (see screenshot below)
Create_Space-2.jpg
6. You now have a new "Storage Space" added to the selected "Storage Pool". (see screenshot below)

this may be a very stupid question but I was having a look at creating a pool and I have actually created the pool with a HDD that wasn't empty. Is there any way to recover the data from it?

Hello Bobby, and welcome to Eight Forums. :)

If the HDD was empty, then there wouldn't be any data on it though.

What type of Storage Space did you create, and with how many HDDs.

Ah, I see. When it creates a storage pool from the hard drive, it also formats it during the process. You might see if you may be able to use this to recover any data on the drive, but since it's been formatted, it will reduce the chance.

Thanks for the help I wasnt able to recover the data but I would like to be able to recover the disc. At the moment it wont show up on explorer or command prompt or disk manager but I have found it in partition recovery. Unfortunately I dont know how to make it usable again. Can you please point me in the right direction?
