How to Add or Remove Control Panel from Navigation Pane in Windows 8 and 8.1

This tutorial will show you how to add or remove Control Panel from the navigation pane of File Explorer for all users in Windows 8, Windows RT, Windows 8.1, and Windows RT 8.1.

This includes Control Panel for when Show all folders is checked and not checked.

You must be signed in as an administrator to be able to do the steps in this tutorial.

Here's How:

1. If you have not already, you will need to take ownership for Administrators first with the Replace owner on subcontainers and objects box checked, then set permissions to "Allow" the Administrators group "Full control" of the {26EE0668-A00A-44D7-9371-BEB064C98683} key in the registry (regedit.exe) below.

2. If you have a 64-bit Windows and have not already, you will need to take ownership for Administrators first, then set permissions to "Allow" the Administrators group "Full control" of the ShellFolder key in the registry (regedit.exe) below.

NOTE: This step does not apply to 32-bit Windows.

3. Do step 4 or 5 below depending on if you have a 32-bit or 64-bit Windows 8 installed.

4. If you have a 32-bit Windows 8, download step 4A, 4B, or 4C below for what you would like to do, and go to step 6 below.
A) To Add "Control Panel" to Navigation Pane

C) To Restore Default "Control Panel" in Navigation Pane
NOTE: This is to only have the Control Panel display in the navigation pane when you have Show all folders checked.​

5. If you have a 64-bit Windows 8, download step 5A, 5B, or 5C below for what you would like to do, and go to step 6 below.
A) To Add "Control Panel" to Navigation Pane

6. Save the .reg file to your desktop.

7. Double click/tap on the downloaded .reg file to Merge it.

8. If prompted, click/tap on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK to approve the merge.

9. Restart explorer, sign out and in, OR restart the PC to apply.

10. If you like, you can delete the downloaded .reg file if you like.
