Windows Phone 8 Internet Sharing - Set Up

How to Set Up Internet Sharing (tethering) of Cellular Data Connection in Windows Phone 8

information   Information
If you like, you could turn your Windows Phone 8 into a mobile hotspot by sharing your cellular data connection over Wi-Fi. Other devices that have Wi-Fi can then use your shared data connection to connect to the Internet.

This tutorial will show you how to set up internet sharing (tethering) on your Windows Phone 8 to share it's cellular data connection with another device over Wi-Fi. For example, with a wireless Windows 8.1 laptop or tablet.

Note   Note

  • To share your cellular data connection, this feature must be available from your mobile operator and enabled on your current phone plan. This is also known as tethering and often costs extra.
  • When you and others use the shared connection on another device, it uses data from your cellular data plan. You should be aware of any data limits you have on your plan, so you aren't charged extra.
  • By default, tethered connections on Windows RT 8.1 are metered. Apps and updates may not download over a metered connection.
  • You can share your cellular data connection over Wi-Fi with up to 8 guests (devices) at the same time.
  • When you're sharing your cellular data connection, you won't be able to use a Wi-Fi connection on your phone.
  • Internet Sharing on Windows Phone 8 will be turned off automatically if it's not used for a few minutes. This would be a good reason to use Bluetooth to pair your Windows Phone 8 with a Windows 8.1 laptop or tablet that you often connect on with to allow it to automatically connect on as needed. See the yellow Tip box at the bottom of this tutorial for more on Bluetooth pairing.
  • Tap the top of the phone's screen to see the status bar, which has icons that tell you a lot about your phone—including information related to connection sharing. When you're sharing your cellular data connection, the Internet sharing Sharing system-icon-internet-sharing.png icon appears at the top of the screen.

Here's How:

1. On your Windows Phone 8, open the app list, and tap on Settings. (see screenshot below)

3. Turn on internet sharing, and do step 4 or 5 below for what you would like to do. (see screenshot below)

4. If you want to continue using the current Broadcast name and Password, then go to step 6 below. (see screenshot below step 3)

5. If you want to change the Broadcast name and Password, then tap on setup. (see screenshot below step 3)
NOTE: The broadcast name or password cannot include these characters: "&'<>
A) In the Broadcast name box, type a network name. This is the name that you and others will see and use to connect to your shared connection over Wi-Fi on another device. (see screenshot below)
B) In the Password (minimum 8 characters) box, type a password that's required to connect to and use your shared connection.
C) When finished, tap on the Donedone.png button.

6. To use your shared Internet connection on a Wi-Fi enabled device, select the broadcasted Wi-Fi network name on the device, and then enter the password. For example, on a wireless Windows 8.1 laptop or tablet. (see screenshots below)

Tip   Tip
If you often connect on with a Windows 8.1 tablet or laptop, then you could also use Bluetooth to pair your Windows Phone 8 with the Windows 8.1 tablet or laptop to make connecting easier.

When paired, you'll be connected and ready to go. The password is entered for you, and you can connect even if Internet sharing is turned off on your Windows Phone 8. This will allow you to not have to dig out your phone and turn on Internet sharing since it's done automatically when paired.

You will need to have Windows Phone 8 software version 8.0.10501.127 or later installed to be able connect this way.

When paired, the Windows Phone 8 wireless network in Windows 8.1 will have the same name (ex: Windows Phone) in Networks (connect to) as it shows in Bluetooth devices.

That's it,
