IE11 Modern - Open Tab in New Window Side by Side

How to Open Tab in New Modern IE11 Window Side by Side in Windows 8.1

information   Information
The new Snap feature in Windows 8.1 allows you to now be able to open a tab in modern IE11 in a new modern IE11 window side by side each other on the same display.

This tutorial will show you how to open a tab in a new window of modern IE11 having two modern IE11 windows showing side by side on the same display in Windows 8.1 and Windows RT 8.1.

Note   Note
Modern Internet Explorer 11 (IE11) from your Start screen will only work if you have Internet Explorer 11 (desktop) set as the default program for your web browser, and you have at least a 1024 x 768 screen resolution.

Here's How:

1. While in modern IE11 from your Start screen, either click/tap on the Address bar button Address_Bar_button.jpg at the bottom right corner, press the :winkey: + Z keys, right click on an empty area in modern IE11, swipe/flick up from the bottom of a touch screen, or swipe/flick down from the top of a touch screen. (see screenshot below)

2. Right click or press and hold on an open tab, and click/tap on Open tab in new window. (see screenshot below)

3. The tab will now be open in a new modern IE11 window to the right of the original modern IE11 window side by side. You will notice how there's a gap between the tabs in the address bar pane indicating that the tabs are in separate windows. (see screenshots below)

4. If you like, you could press and hold on the border button border_button.jpg between the side by side modern IE11 windows to drag and drop the border line to the left or right to adjust it how you like. (see screenshot below)

5. You can now browse in both modern IE11 windows as usual.

Tip   Tip

  • The tabs on the left in the address bar pane are the ones opened in that modern IE11 window. (see bottom screenshot below step 3)
  • The tabs on the right in the address bar pane are the ones opened in the other modern IE11 window. (see bottom screenshot below step 3)
  • Closing a tab on the left in the address bar pane in either side by side modern IE11 window will remove that tab in the address bar pane in both. (see bottom screenshot below step 3)
  • Closing a tab on the right in the address bar pane in either side by side modern IE11 window will close the other modern IE11 window, and the remaining modern IE11 will fill the whole screen again. (see bottom screenshot below step 3)
  • If you completely close either side by side modern IE11 windows, then it will close both.
  • If you only soft close either side by side modern IE11 window by quickly dragging it from the top downwards and release without it flipping over to show the default IE11 tile icon, then the other modern IE11 window would still stay open for you to be able to adjust it's border how you like, or to snap with another app.

That's it,
Shawn
