How to Open and Close Tabs in Modern IE11 in Windows 8.1

This tutorial will show you how to open new tabs and close tabs while using modern Internet Explorer 11 (IE11) in Windows 8.1 and Windows RT 8.1.

Note   Note
Modern Internet Explorer 11 (IE11) from your Start screen will only work if you have Internet Explorer 11 (desktop) set as the default program for your web browser, and you have at least a 1024 x 768 screen resolution.

Tip   Tip
You can switch between opened tabs in modern IE11 by either pressing the :winkey: + Z keys, right clicking on an empty area in modern IE11, or swipe/flick up from the bottom of a touch screen, or swipe/flick down from the top of a touch screen, then click/tap on the tab you want to open.





OPTION ONE

To Open a New Tab in Modern IE11


1. While in modern IE11 from your Start screen, do step 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6 below for what you would like to do.​
2. Press the CTRL + T keys to open the New tab page in a new tab, and go to step 7 below.​
3. Press the CTRL + W keys to open the New tab page in the current tab, and go to step 7 below.​
4. Right click or press and hold on a URL link in a website, click/tap on Open link in new tab, and go to step 8 below. (see screenshot below)​
NOTE: It will depend on what you have your new tab settings set to for how the new tab page will automatically open to it or not.​

5. Open Pinned, Frequent, or Favorites, right click or press and hold on the site you want, click/tap on Open in new tab, and go to step 8 below. (see screenshot below)​

6. Either click/tap on the Address bar button Address_Bar_button.jpg at the bottom right corner, press the :winkey: + Z keys, right click on an empty area in modern IE11, swipe/flick up from the bottom of a touch screen, or swipe/flick down from the top of a touch screen. (see screenshot below)​

A) Click/tap on the New tab button plus-button.jpg , and go to step 7 below. (see screenshot below)​
NOTE: If you like, you could also click/tap on the Tools tab button Tab_Tools_button.jpg , and click/tap on New InPrivate tab.​

7. Either click/tap on a Pinned, Frequent, or Favorites site to open one in the new tab, or type in a URL address in the address bar below and press Enter or click/tap on the arrow to the right of the address bar. (see screenshot below)​

8. You have now opened the website in a new tab in modern IE11.​






OPTION TWO

To Close Tabs in Modern IE11


1. While in modern IE11 from your Start screen, do step 2, 3, or 4 below for what you would like to do.​
2. Close modern IE11 to close modern IE11 and all opened tabs in it, then go to step 8 below.​
3. Press the CTRL + W keys to close the currently opened tab, and go to step 8 below.​
4. Either click/tap on the Address bar button Address_Bar_button.jpg at the bottom right corner, press the :winkey: + Z keys, right click on an empty area in modern IE11, swipe/flick up from the bottom of a touch screen, or swipe/flick down from the top of a touch screen. (see screenshot below)​

5. Do step 6 or 7 below for how you would like to close tabs.​
6. To Close a Single Tab in Modern IE11
A) Click/tap on the Close X button at the bottom right corner of any tab you would like to close, and go to step 8 below when finished. (see screenshot below)​
OR
B) Press the middle mouse button on any tab you would like to close, and go to step 8 below when finished. (see screenshot below)​

7. To Close All Other Tabs Except One in Modern IE11
A) Right click or press and hold on the one tab you want to keep open, click/tap on Close other tabs, and go to step 8 below. (see screenshot below)​

8. The tab(s) have now been closed.​

I have a tip you can add to this to open a page in a new tab click on the link with the middle mouse button and to close a tab if you click on the tab with the middle mouse button it will close it weather you are on the page or not, CTRL + W will close the page you are on
