Show Command Prompt or PowerShell in Win+X Power User Tasks Menu in Windows 8.1

This tutorial will show you how to have either the Command Prompt or Windows PowerShell items show in your Win+X Power User Tasks menu in Windows 8.1.

OPTION ONE

Command Prompt or PowerShell in WIN+X in Navigation Properties


1. From your desktop, right click or press and hold on the taskbar, and click/tap on Properties. (see screenshot below)​

2. Click/tap on the Navigation tab, and do step 3 or 4 below for what you would like to do. (see screenshot below)​
3. To Show "Command Prompt" Items on :winkey:+X Menu
A) Under Corner navigation, uncheck the Replace Command Prompt with Windows PowerShell in the menu when I right-click the lower-left corner or press Windows key+X box, and click/tap on OK.​
4. To Show "Windows PowerShell" Items on :winkey:+X Menu
NOTE: This is the default setting.​
A) Under Corner navigation, check the Replace Command Prompt with Windows PowerShell in the menu when I right-click the lower-left corner or press Windows key+X box, and click/tap on OK.​

OPTION TWO

Show Command Prompt or PowerShell in WIN+X using a BAT File



Note   Note
The .bat files below are for the registry key and value below.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced

DontUsePowerShellOnWinX DWORD

0 = Show "Windows PowerShell"
1 = Show "Command Prompt"


1. Do step 2 or 3 below for what you would like to do.​
2. To Show "Windows PowerShell" Items on :winkey:+X Menu
NOTE: This is the default setting.​
A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the .bat file below, and go to step 4 below.​

3. To Show "Command Prompt" Items on :winkey:+X Menu
A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the .bat file below, and go to step 4 below.​

4. Save the .bat file to your desktop.​
5. Unblock the .bat file, then double click/tap on the .bat file to run it.​
6. If prompted, click/tap on Run and Yes (UAC).​
7. You will now notice a command prompt open and your screen flash as explorer is restarted to apply the registry changes.​
