I'm afraid that resetting IE back to default may be the only thing that may help since we're dealing with an unknown cause. This will only affect IE, and IE can easily be set back to how she likes though.

OK, problem solved! Your query about Crapcleaner reminded me that Advanced System Care had run before this problem occurred I had checked all the settings but saw nothing that would cause it. So, I uninstalled ASC and then I was able to get websites into History. I have also re-installed it and IE is still working OK.

I have written to IOBit re ASC asking what setting would cause IE10 NOT to add sites to History.I will post back when I have their answer.

So thanks again Shawn, for all the tuts and links you sent me, they've all gone towards my learning curve with Win 8, although I only get to use her laptop when she has problems!

    Regards

That's great news Bertie. Thank you for posting back with the cause you found. It'll be interesting to hear what IObit says about it.

Modern Vs. Desktop Internet Explorer
It's probably come up before, but what do you guys think of the modern IE? The makers of my screen reader recommend Jaws users use the desktop version rather than the modern layout because it works the best with the keyboard, so that's what I've been using, but I'm curious about the new version,...
