How to Sign in or out of OneDrive App in Windows 8, Windows 8.1, or Windows RT

OneDrive is a cloud-based storage service where you can view, browse, upload, and share the files you saved online to OneDrive.com. Store any file on OneDrive and it's automatically available to access or share from any device.

The OneDrive app included in Windows 8 and Windows RT let's you easily view, upload, and share your files on OneDrive and even access your OneDrive files across Windows 8 apps.

Windows 8.1 and Windows RT 8.1 make it easier to save and work with files on your OneDrive cloud storage. Whenever you sign in with your Microsoft account to a PC running Windows 8.1 or Windows RT 8.1, your files on OneDrive are right there waiting for you. The "OneDrive desktop app" is no longer needed. You can browse your OneDrive using the OneDrive app or File Explorer in the desktop. In File Explorer, your OneDrive appears in the left navigation pane. You can expand it to view your folders on OneDrive.

This tutorial will show you how to sign in or sign out of the "OneDrive" Store app in Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows RT, and Windows RT 8.1.

Note   Note
If you are signed in to Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows RT, or Windows RT 8.1 with a Microsoft account, then you will automatically be signed in to the OneDrive app with the same Microsoft account when you open it. You will not be able to sign out of the OneDrive app.

If you are signed in to Windows 8 or Windows RT with a local account, then you will need to do OPTION ONE below to sign in or out of the OneDrive app anytime you like.

If you are signed in to Windows 8.1 or Windows RT 8.1 with a local account, then you will need to do OPTION TWO below to switch your local account to a Microsoft account. You will not be able to use the Store app in Windows 8.1 or Windows RT 8.1 unless you are signed in to a Microsoft account.

In Windows 8.1 and Windows RT 8.1, you can't switch between accounts in the OneDrive app. When you sign in to a PC with your Microsoft account, you're automatically signed in to OneDrive with that account. You can still get to OneDrive files for a different account by going to OneDrive.com.

Tip   Tip
If you want a copy of your OneDrive files and folders saved on your PC and kept in sync with OneDrive.com and other computers, then you would need to install the OneDrive desktop app for Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8.

OPTION ONE

Sign in or out of OneDrive Store App in Windows 8 or Windows RT



1. While signed in to Windows 8 or Windows RT with a local account, do step 2 or 3 below for what you would like to do.

2. To Sign in OneDrive Store App in Windows 8 or Windows RT
A) Open the OneDrive app on your Start screen.​
B) If not already signed in, enter your Microsoft account email address and password for the OneDrive, and click/tap on Save. (see screenshot below)​
NOTE: If you do not have a Microsoft account, then you could click/tap on Sign up for a Microsoft account to create one.​

A) Whenever you open the OneDrive app, you will automatically be signed in to it with this Microsoft account until you sign out in step 3 below.​

3. To Sign in OneDrive Store App in Windows 8 or Windows RT
A) Open the OneDrive app on the Start screen.​
B) While in the OneDrive app, open the Charms bar, and click/tap on the Settings charm. (see screenshot below)​
NOTE: You could also press the :winkey: + I keys while in the OneDrive app to open the Settings charm.​

C) In the Settings flyout, click/tap on Options. (see screenshot below)​

D) In the Options flyout, click/tap on Sign out. (see screenshot below)​
NOTE: You will not have this option available if you are signed in to Windows 8 or Windows RT with a Microsoft account instead of a local account.​

E) You can now close the OneDrive app if you like, or sign in to the OneDrive app with another or same Microsoft account. (see screenshot below)​

F) You will remain signed out of the OneDrive app until you sign in next using step 2 above.​





OPTION TWO

Sign in or out of Modern OneDrive App in Windows 8.1 or Windows RT 8.1


1. While signed in to Windows 8.1 or Windows RT 8.1 with a local account, do step 2 or 3 below for how you would like to switch to a Microsoft account.​
2. To Switch to a Microsoft Account in PC settings
3. To Switch to a Microsoft Account from SkyDrive App
A) Open the OneDrive app on the Start screen.​
B) Type in your local user account's password, and click/tap on Next. (see screenshot below)​

C) Type in the email address and password of your Microsoft account you previously created, and click/tap on Next. (see screenshots below)​
NOTE: If you do not currently have a Microsoft account, then you can click/tap on the Sign up for a Microsoft account link instead to create one.​

D) You could now use two-step verification to add this PC as a "trusted device", and click/tap on Next. (see screenshot below)​

E) Enter the received security code, and click/tap on Next. (see screenshot below)​

F) Click/tap on Use OneDrive. (see screenshot below)​

H) Close and reopen the OneDrive app to be signed in to it with a Microsoft account. (see screenshot below)​
