    It's a Lenovo Z570 Laptop.
Right now, I'm looking to load my original 8.0, stand alone.
    Then upgrade to 8.1

THEN, install the original Windows 7 that came with the machine, I have the installation discs, on a VHD created just like your instructions for Windows 8 vhd. Think it will work?

Sorry Pete. Looking at pages 51-55 of the user guide of the Lenovo Z570 at the link below, it shows that it only has one 2.5" HDD.

It's worth a try. It should work.

Would I be able to update to windows 8.1 through the windows store if I installed w8 through this method on a vhd? Thanks!

No,not using the vhd. You get a warning that you cannot update to the 8.1.
It's a statement, no wiggle room.
However, you can install the 8.1 directly using VMWare by downloading an 8.1 iso using your W-8 key.

I think Brink has a how-to somewhere on here also.

Does anyone know method of upgrading to 8.1 when 8 is on vhd works?

"I have a duel boot Windows 7 and Windows 8 PC so to get around this issue I did the following.

Booted into Windows 7 and mounted the VHD containing my Windows 8 OS then created a 50GB partition on one of my drives.

I then used Norton Ghost to do a disk image of the mounted VHD to the new partition, rebooted and used NeoSmart Easy BCD to detect the Windows 8 install on the new partition and create a boot entry.

Rebooted and selected the Windows 8 OS on the new partition, ran the update from the store, booted back into Windows 7 mounted the VHD containing the Windows 8 OS (I could have created a new VHD) and then used Norton Ghost to image the 50GB partition containing the updated Windows 8.1 to the mounted VHD.

Rebooted and selected the original boot entry for Windows 8 and the VHD now containing Windows 8.1 booted fine.

Deleted the 50GB partition, and removed the boot entry pointing to the partition.

This whole process took less than an hour and the OS did not need reactivating as it all took place on the same hardware."

Thanks if you have a solution not too difficult to apply.

    Hello Crazbanditz,

I'm afraid it appears that it's one of those don't know until you try deals.

To be safe, create a backup copy of the VHD file in case it doesn't go well.

Ok. The backup part is a definite but the important thing is that if it doesnt go well it would not screw up my native windows 7 right? Because in one point of time there would be three boot entries and two that are called windows 8...

All I can tell you is that it told me in the form of a simple "You cannot upgrade to Windows 8.1".
I had the 8 installed on a Lenovo laptop which has 4 partitions installed that shouldn't be touched.
That was my reason for the VHD which worked nicely with the 8 version.
Trying the upgrade did nothing to the existing data.
That's when I went to the VMware.

Yeah, using a virtual machine would be much better. I know for a fact that you upgrade in a VM.
