I don't know, sorry. I have only ever used retail versions. I suppose it would be tied to the specifications of the virtual PC.

currently i have two OS, Win 7 pro 64bit and Win 8 pro 64bit (that's from MSDN Academic Alliance)
Would this OS type are safe to setup a dual boot ?

Currently Win 7 is already installed on my System.
i have plan to install win 8, because it could be expired (have an expired date around this mid year i think)

so far is been great enough using Win7, my PC is majorly for gaming, do you think is okay/necessary to install win 8 on my system so become a dual boot? what do you guys though?

the only reason i would want to install win 8 because, i'm afraid it got expired, got it from msdnaa.

    this is my disk management,

    1. 500GB seagate (3 partition, C: win7+program, D/E: data & program)
    2. 2TB seagate (this is new HDD, 2 partition, H: still empty, I: for data)

my plan is i would to install win 8 on the drive H.
If i installed win 8 on the drive H, would be the data from drive I got deleted? (just for safety question).
but the other side, i would have a plan to buy SSD too, but i'm not sure when. If i buy ssd someday, Can i move OS Win8 system that already installed, into that ssd someday? and still become a dual boot?

overall question: are this already safe enough to follow 'dual boot' instruction on the first page?
What is the best way to install windows 8 for a dualboot (from my condition)?

    thanks in advanced.
Hello ZBrotheR, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Yes, you could dual boot with Windows 8 on H without losing anything on I:. Just be sure to have both hard drives connected, and only select H: to install Windows 8 to.

When you get the SSD, you would need to remove Windows 8 from H: first, then install Windows 8 to the SSD. Be sure to back up anything that you do not want to lose before doing so though.

Since it's an OEM license, it would be best to install is on the computer and not a VM.

    Thanks for answer guys.

hey btw, i think i'm a bit misunderstood lol.
i just realize from this thread,
windows key from msdnaa is last forever, not only for 2 years.
so that's mean i could install that win8 in any day in the future.
i though my Win8 key will be expired in Sept 2014, so that makes me in hurry to install it, but it's wrong.

Just bought a copy of 8.1 and I'm going to install it to dual boot with my Win 7 installation. I have a question about how the Win 8.1 installation will see the partition it is loaded on. When I'm in the new 8.1 OS will it see it as drive c or as a different drive letter? I'm thinking of the future should I decide to remove the Win 7 installation.

Hello Rachel, and welcome to Eight Forums.

By default, Windows will always see the partition it is installed on as the C: drive, and the others with another drive letter.

For example, when you startup in Windows 7, it will see itself as C: , and Windows 8.1 as say D: . When you startup Windows 8.1, it'll see itself as C:, and Windows 7 as another drive letter.

Thanks Brink. I tried out the pre-release version of Windows 8 but decided to stick with Windows 7. With the release of 8.1, I thought I'd re-visit Windows 8 and have another look at it.

Shawn I am shortly replacing this laptop which I run 8.1 in 7 style and the machine I am getting is the
Asus ROG G750JM which comes with a 1TB drive and 8.1 already installed.
Now I have read through this tutorial and I am getting the impression it is adding 8 to an existing 7 install.
So given what I am getting and that it has 8 installed I am wondering if I should be reading another tutorial. I want to the dual boot because I prefer the 7 and would also like 7 on board to use as a primary boot.
I know this sounds a bit wafty but there was no tutorial I coud find in the 7's forum tutorials.
